Hi, I am trying to figure out how sound effects are done in games.

It seems that there is a thick line in sound effects between commercial games and budget/free games.
Take Sauerbraten, for instance. It's free, it's got awesome graphics for a free game; yet all of it's sounds requested and purchased from sound makers.
I don't know how TGC gets their sounds; this is one thing I am interested in.

I am more interested in creating my own sounds. I don't have a $30,000 sound effect room like Bethesda and I am sure TGC doesn't either. (Then again, the TGC sound effects aren't exactly music to the ears.)

How do you, TGC devs get your game sounds? (I would really like this to be answered by one of the forum-frequent devs.)

How do you, FPSC devs get your game sounds?

Does anybody know what programs are useful for creating sound effects?

There are many, many free sounds on the net, you can also purchase sound effect CD for a few quid and you can get Audacity for free!

For sound effects you need to think of the end result sound, not what makes it. I did a quick tutorial on producing a monster growl: Monster Growl Tutorial. It might be of interest to you.
