I'm having the same problem as many people that just got upgrade 5. That models are black or just not showing. Appearently it all has to do with directx 9.0 and Nvidia chips.
I just read this on a half-life 2 forum

"Supposedly there will be problems running Half Life 2 on GeForce (most to all Nvidia graphic boards). There will be texture drop outs and bleeds in the game if you have a GeForce 1 -> GeForce FX. Valve said that that the only way to fix these graphic problems is to use ATI graphics board"

And another post in that thread said:
"After having read a few articles it looks like there is actually no way around the problem.
It appears that the problem is with directx 9 & the way some cards use it. Apparently they are gonna solve the problem later on in directx 9.1"

I can only draw the conclusion that this is what messes things up for some people with patch 5 including me, since it uses directx 9 technology.
Ofcourse, if anyone is having problems with none-textured models and other crap, and are not using a geforce card, then i don't really know what the problem is..
Otherwise we'll all just have to wait for directx 9.1

Thank you Naeza! It's a shame though... But the good news it's not DB's fault, but Nvidia's/direcX's. But when will DirectX 9.1 come out? I'm going to search for a while on google. Thank you for sharing Naeza!

You only realize how happy you were, if you aren't that happy anymore...

Can you even run the examples in DX9 SDK? All of the DX9 SDK examples work for me on a GF ti4400 with no problems, only the rtpatches demo (supported by FX and ATI DX9 cards) crawl on my card, the 98% of thr SDK all works fine for me. Additionally, does't half life using a opengl driver too? I'm sure I have read somewhere Valve's engine scales down based on your hardware (it can switch between older directx versions) so all is not lost.

I initially had texture problems with the first release of DX 9.0, with DX 9.0b, it happens very rarely.

That's interesting reading, but I wonder how valid it is? Do you have a URL for that forum link? I only ask because I've got a GeForce FX5900 Ultra installed and my alien model appears fine (as do most textures in games). I fear the issue may be more localised.

Cheers,

Rich

This is where i read it, dunno how valid it is though.. Allthough it all seems perfectly sane considering there are lot's of people having trouble with this since patch 5

And as an answer to rich; i think it depends on your system.. not all systems with geforce chips go bonkers with 9.0 if i get it correctly. But some seems to.

I'm wondering, in regard to DirectX 9, whether DB will provide a layer for the new shading language availible since DirectX 9.

You can read all about it here...

Rich, What is your version of Nvidia Drivers that you are using? Can you check for me?

Quote from the link:
"Some industry sources indicated that the problem with such FSAA is a known one and is to be addressed in DirectX 9.1 and next-generation graphics processors with Pixel Shaders 3.0 and Vertex Shaders 3.0"

Well then its a DirectX issue ... I am sure I saw a link on RGT where Nvidia were blaming Microsoft for FSAA problems but Microsft says it's Nvidia's drivers, I wasn't aware ATI cards were effected too.

Weirdly, the September issue of PC Format tests various Radeons and FX cards, they noticed no difference in picture quality between Radeons 9700 / FX5900 series on with AA/AF on max settings ... roll on DX 9.1

DBP already does support the new shading language! - that is what the FX system introduced with Upgrade 5 was all about - being able to load and use HLSL effects.

Heh.. I swear people ask for things without even checking to see if they are already included!

45.23 - the DLL version numbers are 6.14.10.4523

Also interestingly, DBPro U5 works on DirectX9.0a and 9.0b. Everyone should have b installed anyway, but I noticed no difference between the two versions.

Rich
