$308 Duron 2000+

excluding monitor:
AMD Duron Pro 2000+ CPU
ECS K7SOM+ Main Board
256MB PC-266 DDR
32M Integrated Video/Sound/LAN
30GB HDD/7200rpm
52X CD-ROM *
Keyboard, Mouse, SPKs
ATX 300W Case/USB 2.0 PORTS

I feel like buying it and then upgrading it with a Radeon 9200 sapphire. Would that work? Or even be worth it? Cause as alot of u know i am not exactly a expert computer hardware technition. I dont even know wat "AMD" is! And sorry for all the constant annoying questions regarding my pc(e.g "should i install win xp?" "how do i get rid of win xp?" "What video card should i get?" blablabla.

thanks

If your gonna get a new video card, make sure your mother board has the right ports. My parents made the mistake of asking HP support what ports my motherboard has, and they told us to get a video card my motherboard couldnt use (tip to all people out there, dont get an HP or Compaq computer, their technical support is so dumb, they dont even know the hardware that they put in their own computers!)

As for the rest of the deal, its pretty good. I suggest that you get a CD Burner, and maybe a floppy drive (if it already doesnt have one) and with the money left over, I'm sure you could buy a halfway decent monitor (saw a nice 17" flat screen monitor for $100 the other day)

How expesnive is the whole rig? No, that's not a terribly good computer... low RAM, mediocre CPU, no/cheap video card? Frankly you'd be ripped off if you paid anything over $450 for that mess.

I recommend an Alienware. They make machines for serious gaming which you can customize on their site. It's not as cheap as building it yourself, but they ship ready-to-use with everything put together as you customized it.

I would avoid the onboard stuff as you will only have to replace it. Cheap onboard sound cards are often as useless as the onboard video cards.

After you add the price of an after market sound card and video card it would have been cheaper to buy a better comp in the first place.

I would aim just a little higher up and get one with a decent sound and video card included.

I can't say there is anything particually wrong with the durons. At least not with the older ones. They are not as good as the athlons but they are quite a bit cheaper. For a buget comp they where a good buy. I haven't used the later ones so they may have gone bad.

@mouse: the most I can spend on a system is 400$ (without tax) yes i know about alienware. And no I don't need a cutting edge machine the size of my fridge worth a truck load of cash.

I am simply looking for a *good* (not "terribly" good) system thats decent and reliable. Something that can run DBP at reasonable frame rates. (unlike the 3-4 fps i get with DBC right now)
I am also replacing the video card with a Radeon 9200(wich is 120$)
so this is wats its like in total.

For 488$ (Canadian) i can get a:

AMD XP 2200+
256MB RAM
128 MB ATI Radeon 9200/32mb Sound/LAN
30GB HDD
52XCDROM

So tell me if that is worth it? Or maybe its sack of dead fish?

thanks

that system doesn't seem that bad, just get yourself a good dx9 compatible video card - maybe an decent ati or Nvidia GeForce Ti (stay away from nvidia MX cards)

For a video card, I suggest a cheap FX card. They have all the new capabilities, if not quite as much speed as a 9200, and come as cheap as $50-60!

Alongside that system, it'd be a decent deal for that much money.
