I'd say the 9600 is at a pretty neat price lately. ~€80 and it runs pretty much everything.

What's your budget? Even a step higher, a 9800 GT can be had for about $100 on newegg. My personal opinion - try and get the highest model number in the series that you can afford.

Right now I use a GTX 285 - near the top of Nvidia's line, but I tend to keep things for a long time rather than upgrade every year.

Everything in the Geforce 8,9, and 200 series can handle both directx 9 and 10 and all current shader models.

Why are you done with ATI cards? They're so much cheaper than nVidia cards and they perform better too.

and they perform better too.

no they dont, with my experiance with them, this is the third one i bought and none of them can display a shader right. no im better off with a nvidea card.

I myself find nothing wrong with using a GeForce 6200 (yes, old, but it still works for me). It handles Vista and Windows 7 very nicely, but is NOT practical for any game of higher requirements than say...Team Fortress 2.

Temporarly away from the Phoenix Sentry.

The 9800GT would be a great choice, and incredible bang for the buck. Great for development too, lots of polycounters use this card. Yeah ditch the ATI, I can't even get my laptop's ATI card to display a normal map in max. Frustrating when your work is divided between two computers.

For every person that says their ATI card works with shaders, there is another that says they don't. Trust me, you won't have a problem with the Nvidia card.

Getting an Nvidia card is the way to go.

There are too many risks getting an ATI card and finding it doesn't support a particular shader which hampers development and enjoyment of some commercial games even.

You really should go for the 9800. I've been told its important to get something in the 800 series e.g. 8800, 9800 as the architecture is better than lower series apparently. I'm no expert but since switching from my ATI to Nvidia 9800XT its been heaven.

Just get an NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT. You'll need a PSU above the wattage of 400 though.

What manufacturer were you using for the ATI cards? Cheap makes could be the reason, i recommend either a Sapphire or Asus, very good makes, im using a Sapphire 4850HD right now, and i love it, works amazingly.

I recommend the 9800 GT as well. It's what I use, and I've never encountered troubles.
