I've just ordered my new PC...a laptop (joy!).

Check it out:
- Pentium 4 2.8Ghz
- 64Mb ATI Mobility 9600
- 512Mb RAM
- 15" SXGA+ display (1400x1050)
- DVD Burner/CDRW/DVD Drive

All this for <£1200!!!

I can't wait to get my hands on it. Just think, now I can program in DB whilst sat on my couch watching TV instead of cowering in the cold dark study

Laptops rule! - looks like a real nice spec you got there.

My little 450mhz laptop is nice for DBC and emulator games, and the odd bout of Warcraft with the boy .

So which laptop did you go for in the end?

Since I got my laptop I've hardly touched my desktop pc! I prefer to lounge about on sofa or in bed with laptop. If you have ADSL can highly reccomend you get a wireless pcmcia card and router coz you can then browse net anywhere in house or garden.

spooky > it's great isn't it? I haven't looked back from the day where I kitted my appartment out with wireless access. Now I can appease the missus whilst still feeding my internet habit.

Wireless is the best.

Tell us how it plays games, as I'm thinking of getting something similar at some point (Don't use laptops for games really). I mean does it play, say, UT2003 well?

Cheers

Oh yeah, and where did you get it?

And did you really mean DVD burner? ie. writes to DVDs, or just that it's a DVD/CD-RW combo?

Cheers

problem i have with laptops is the fact that if you do play games on them even the best batteries only last a matter of 4-5hrs ... then you have to find a wall socket.

my HP lasts a nice 11hrs generally, but even that is pretty poor cause you can really loose track of when you last charged the batteries and such, and then there's the battery cost for the wireless adapter ... the more intensive programs that use your laptop the less time you actually get on them.

i'd hate to think how much time my battery would give on the 17" version.

that said still a killer for gaming

AthlonMP 2400+
512mb ddr2 ram shared
GeForceFX Go! 64mb ddr2 exclusive ram
Sound Blaster Audigy with 4 Positional Speakers
80gb ata/133 hdd
dvd + cdrw drive
15" tft-dvi screen

you can unhook the screen and use it as a static monitor if you want, which is kinda weird but cool.
think the best feature of it is the fact that its upto 180g shockproof ... which means if i accidentially drop it down the stairs (which lets face it, who hasn't done this atleast once with a laptop/cellphone/etc...) you can pick it back up and it usually is just fine, no data damage - do that to a normal system and your looking at a nice corrupt hdd.

@Dazzag,
Yep I did say DVD Burner (ie burn DVDs, burn CDs and play DVDs).
I most certainly will let you all know how it plays games. I have read that it pushes 10,000 on 3DMark2001 (although I think 9500 is a fairer bet).

@Raven:
11hrs????? My ar**. No laptop provides 11 hours of battery time.

@FieldDoc,
Hmmm. 10,000. Thats pretty good for a laptop. And a DVD writer too for less than £1200 (all in?). Nice. Where did you get it from?

@Raven,
11hrs?????????????????????????????????? Does it happen to have a backpack for the battery, or did you forget it was still plugged into the wall? My HP got a pretty good battery rating at the time (couple of years ago) and that will struggle to get more than a couple of hours with standard internet browsing. Yet to time it with my laptop cooler (totally cool accessory, is a must buy), but even if it doubles the time, 11 hours seems a little excessive. Considering I read an article a while back indicating new tech batteries coming out around 2005 should last 10-15hrs initially, hopefully 20+hrs within a couple of years, then methinks it's a typo.

Cheers

Nothing to it! I also read, and sometimes post in, the 'what laptop' forum where I spotted your posts.

Looks like a very good pc, specially with that 9600 radeon.

Just like all computers should have a hight speed connection and download the software when you want to use it insted of storing it locally. It's like flying cars, always 10 years in the future.

Ehm, haven't got the file download from that central server, but I do have 10 a Mbit (yes, megabit and 10 of them) here for 20 euros a month. I love love living in Sweden.

But then again, since I got it, I'm surprised I get out at all. Perhaps I should move the office here?
