I have just been spending the last 2 days teaching my parents how to turn on a PC, yup!, they just bought a 2.4ghz laptop with 30gig hd, 256mb ram and an (admitedly poxy) intel 3D chipset, yet apart from the video the darn things better than my desktop , so now I have the embarrasment of my parents having a better PC than ME!, AARGH!, (this wouldn`t be such an unusual story, except that at 40, I should have the better PC), they still get that glazed look when they are trying to make up their minds if they should click start or the "little red kiss at the top" (their words), I had to sit through two days of this, I demand compensation (or at least some sympathy )

Well, I have to put up with my Mum having to decide whether to press the left or right mouse button, how to save things etc etc. Mind you, she has the slowest of my computers (at least until the 16th when I finally get my new computers).

I've been charging my parents $1 per question since the day they got their pc, you'd be amazed how much they have learned on their own LOL

When my mom decided to get ADSL here, she wanted to know how to use the Internet, so I taught her. She was learning pretty fast. But now, we have to wait some hours when she goes on some chat program.

Fortunately my parents haven't shown much interest in computers yet. I really hope they can keep that status.

I awoke in a fever. The bedclothes were all soaked in sweat.

Each of the computers in my house have their own strengths:
Mom and Dads computer: Hard Drive (80GB)
Brother: Processor (2.4 Ghrz P4)
Mine: Video Card (NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 128MB)

but mine is really the best when it comes to development.

my mom & dad both have machines that generally surpass what i have for general use ... really this more because i prefer a quieter system when i'm using them that actual need, currently the fastest processor capable of running without a fan is 1ghz - and the quickest GeForceFX capable of also running without a fan is the 5200mx

bonus with all of that being is that my personal system runs at around 5db unless i use my DvD Drive, which is a noisy bugger ... everything else has been rigged to be silent
most people don't even know my computer is on when they're in the room if its just sitting there in standby mode.

but then my parents have always had far better systems than me, they've never needed all that power ... my dad refuses to play most games that even need a 3D Accellerator, think the most advanced games he's played to date are Tomb Raider Unfinished Business and Quake.

and my mom does nothing but emails and word processing, yet still has a system that most gamers would walk over over broken glass with bare feet just to use.

... god knows why i've noticed parents seem to do that, they'll get grafted by the store clerks to buy the most expensive hardware ... and you have to sit there with your lowly Cyrix 6x86 system and onboard Video just wondering what the hell they need a P4 3.0ghz system for when all they do is type in MSWord

My Dad works in IT by trade (hence all the old cast offs I get - phones, laptops, cameras, palms ) and my mum is beginning to get more interested in the web.

Tesco, shopping etc. all online

Theres no place like 127.0.0.1

I'm afraid I'm not into all this organic lark if it's food I'll eat it

ps Tesco do an organic range, don't they? Surely they sell that online?

My folks have a better PC than me.

And they still call CD's and DVD's 'Tips' (English translations: Tapes) - still recovering from the days of Manic Miner I reckon.

Whatever you do, don't get your parents using Instant Messaging. There isn't a day goes by at work, where i don't receive a message which starts "I know you're busy, but I'm having a problem with [blah]"...

ROFL...instant messageing, that would be fatal, I just surfaced from the "day after" refresher course, after two days of seeming to understand it they just forgot it all , I don`t want sympathy any more....I want compensation
