I gave this a few minutes serious thought, and I scanned over all of my games on the shelf, thinking about the music, and none of them have memorable sound tracks. Not for me anyway. Only thing that stands a chance is MSX FM off GTA3. Boring after a the 100th loop, but was cool at the time.

by far (for me) the soundtrack to THE 7th GUEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If anyone want's em I have 35 midis from the original game.
Most of the younger ones here won't know any of this but that game revolutionized the game making industry by being 5-8 years ahead of it's time! I have the original dos version, and the version recompiled for win95. I still play it once in a blue moon in win 98 (runs like a champ)

Anyone remember VESA Local Bus and Trident 1 Meg vid cards! LOL!

I always turn the game music off and just have winamp running in the background.

Game music tends to either be complete rubbish (in my opinion) or the game doesn't include enough different songs makeing it too repetertive.

Depends on my mood...

Any final fantasy tends to have good music, but if I'm in a kill-things mood, (which is rare, to let you know) Quake2 all the way.

All of the music from Vietcong - They were very appropriate and moody.

Theif II - Also has an awesome sound track although it kind of makes the game difficult when you're trying to sneak around lol.

From relatively new games - the soundtrack from Soul Blade is stunning, as are pretty much all the tracks from any Medal of Honor game. Prior to the PC era, well anything by Rob Hubbard, Martin Galway, Jochen Hippel, etc

Cheers,

Does the music to spy hunter 2 sound anything like the music from spy hunter 1 on the speccy?

Anyway - by *far* the best ingame music had to be on Syndicate (the first one). The calm but sinister filler music when nothing's going on, then, when an agent appears, it became very tense. Excellent stuff.

The Spy Hunter 2 music is a beefed up version of the original tune (same cords) - sounds very good, especially the title sequence music.

Final Fantasy 7 had the greatest music in any video game i've ever played, except for the Nomad Soul, but i don't know if that counts as David Bowie done the music for that. Other than that, a game with great music...ever played Gansters? There were 4 soundtracks on the CD with the game, and they were really cool. Jassy. Well that's all from me. -DivW

To tell the truth nothing stands out in modern games, it's either cutesy, techno, or really badly done metal.

The theme for Robocop on the Gameboy (old old old) is really good, I first heard it on the C64 version of Robocop, and it was even used in an Ariston advert!. Mad Max/Jochen Hippel was a genious, the Turrican 1 & 2 music is among his best work.
I don't know who wrote it, but there's a compilation floppy on the ST, it had Captive on it, (Medway Boys 87, but can't be sure) - anyhoo - the little menu at the start has an awesome chip tune on it, that's my all time favourite piece of chip music. For some reason, less is more - if you've only got 3 channels, you gotta make em count, so there was always decent melodies in chip music - despite the fact that it was a really awkward way to compose (on computers like the ST, the chip music was actually a tiny little (like 2k) program that worked on interupts, very difficult to compose, very easy to impliment.

Some 16-bit sampled music was good too though, like Shadow of the Beast with it's flutes (made in the awesome Quartet as opposed to the obvious soundtrackers), Xenon2, Gods, in fact all the Bitmap Bros games had cool music (doot doot, doot de doot de-doot de-doot doot doot, name that tune?)

I really enjoyed Wipeout when it came out, big name artists doing music for a game, I was very impressed. I was even more impressed when a friend of mine (a DJ) came to me and asked if I had heard this "Wipeout" album he just bought. I just laughed, I hadn't heard of a soundtrack being released for a videogame before that!

More recently I really enjoyed the music for Frequency, mostly because it was interactive.

Homeworld. A pretty old game, but that choral version of Samuel Barber's adagio has stuck with me. It was a gorgeous game, homeworld, but by far too difficult. Everything was gorgeous about it.

The three Original Out-run tunes, OR Xmas Nights into Dreams OR Green Hill Zone Sonic 1, OR Tetris manin theme on GB

The soundtrack for Lost World game was pretty stunning too, although no-one has played that because everyone appart from me thought it was too hard and therefore only played the early, rubbish levels lol

One of my favourite tunes was for a game called BioSphere for the Amstrad CPC. Obviously the instrumentation is bad compared to todays tinkering and plucking but it was quite catchy. I'll see if I can rip it into an MP3 and bung it onto me site. (when I've got time).

Is better written as:

Or

I liked the music from the driving training levels in URBAN CHAOS, and the orchestral, victorious music from the Commandos 2 levels. All the commandos tracks are variations of the same thing, but executed differently and sound ace. They make you feel like your in a WW2 film.

Outside gaming its mainly the prodigy (the british one, i hear theres an american prodigy aswell), massive attack, the eagles, doobie brothers, and more. Quite a strange mix for a 16 year old.
