A Ring by any other name..

What does the word 'Ring' make you think of? have you been so
brainwashed that a 'Ring' can only be one thing? Time to think
outside the box people, or prove to us that a 'Ring' can be a
masterfully crafted piece of jewelery..

Once again we are not going to limit the poly count, and we
encourage you to add some simple background to your renders, if
nothing else the last compo should have taught you that a little
added backdrop can make any model look brilliant.

Oh, and I'd like to restate a loose rule.. please, if you can
make your final entry renders 640x480 we will be happy judges.
Besides 640x480 is a good size for posting on the forums.

Cheers people, and have fun with the contest..

Compo ends December 28th 2009.

I think I thought too far from the box...errr...well more like took the box cut it up into a little bunny and set it on fire sort of thing...wow I need sleep...

Was doing this for fun and I thought it would make a decent entry...I was going to texture it, but I'm too tired and lazy to do so right now...might come back to this, probably not though.

Original Model:

Final Render:

Stats:
Modeled in: Truespace 7.6
Tri-Polies: 1226
Scene Lights: 3
Raycast Render, 6m28s
Touch up: Paintshop Pro 8

He says it 'can' be a masterfully crafted ring, he didn't say 'has to be'. Think outside the box, in my case I used a rocket to get out. I was originally going to do the 'red ring of death' but then Hal told me to model him...I must obey, I don't want to die...

David: Is my entry allowed(just to clarify)? If not, no big deal.

Josh, there is definately a 'ring' around that nifty lens.

Cheers!

P.S. when I look at your 'lens' even thought you put "Hello TGC" beside it I keep hearing "Hello Dave, What are you doing Dave.." LoL

I'm new to this particular thread, so let me know if I need to change anything. Here is a ring I threw together, took about 3 hours, so not good for a speed challenge, but it looks okay anyway. I find it strange that you don't require a wireframe with the model. I'll try to participate more.

Its all in the presentation mate, oh and welcome.

The older compettions focused on the model itself, now though, the scene and beauty shot are just as important.

Yeah, no offence, Mazz and Henry, but they don't seem to fit in much.

1 if you pull the triggers it will make your ears ring

2 theres rings on the end of the barrels

3 you can slip your finger into them like a ring

Have the gun facing us, with a bullet exiting it. That would be more appealing

My Finished Entry:

The alarm clock (which certainly does ring) in a suitable setting - which I assume is what is meant by a 'background'...

Ok, the Holidays are over and we Judges found the time to go over the entries and cast our votes. The results are..

3D Master: TDK
Notes: excellent model and the final render/entry made it the focal point of the scene giving it heart and soul. Gratz!

3D Best Model: Dr Parsnips
Notes: A nice example of how a grouping of relatively simple gears can be turned into a techno-punk ring. Nice one!

3D Best Texture: Henry Ham
Notes: Even though we needed to stretch our preconceived conceptions of the word 'Ring' the textures and models were top notch. Congratulations!

This time around Mazz426 is the one who 'inspired' our next 3D compo. I'll be setting that up in a few minutes.

Congratulations to the Winners, and thanks to all who participated, they were all great entries.

Cheers!
