Been working on a few new items for my TGC Store account, and this Boeing 747 - 400 series is one of them. I'm modelling several versions, each with more detail than the last. One version will just be the exterior of the plane, if the users just want to use it in their environments, but the current version Im working on will be modelled head-to-toe inside and out, allowing it to be a really important piece to a game level (you could close the doors, put it in a skybox with sky all around it and scroll the sky textures to have a level inside a flying plane, or you could open the doors and use one of the many props Im creating to go with the plane (stairs) in an airport scene).

Here's a quick screen shot of it's current progress:

The plane on it's own currently stands at roughly 1200 polygons (I expect that to increase to around 1500 or so on completion as I still have the jet engines and landing gears to model). Each chair is 150 polygons, but Im going to have to decrease that as they kill the polygon count (total count with the plane body and all passenger chairs is around 35000 polygons!), but Ill work something out.

The entire model is to scale, based on blueprints I found outlining the front, side and top / bottom layouts of the plane, along with a detailed floor plan that I managed to find that actually lines up perfectly with the mesh.

Anyways, thats what Im working on in my spare time for now. If you haven't noticed, I AM an artist on the TGC store, I have 5 or 6 models uploaded right now, but I plan on expanding that a lot when I finish this plane.

Ill post more as I complete it.

Im thinking Im going to have to start over and model this thing in sections, and these chairs are really killing the poly count. As it is I tried to model them as low poly as I could, but I didn't want to go too stingy as they make up a huge part of the interior of the plane, in some ways they're the most important item on the inside. We'll see.

I'll have to figure something out, the problem is in FPSC - as far as I know, I don't use it for anything other than testing my models - its near impossible to line models up perfectly on their seams, especially if they're being rotated. Not to mention the fact that FPSC makes it really noticable with the light mapping where a model is split...

If I dont do that, Im going to really have to cut down on the chair poly counts, I think I can take them down to 100 without losing too much detail, and I guess I could also delete the polygons underneath the chairs as they'll pretty much never be seen, but other than that my only other option is to cut down on the number of chairs and not model the interior exactly as it is in the real-life version.

I also plan on releasing broken versions of the parts of the plane incase someone wants to make a plane crash scene. I really think when all is said and done this will be a really useful model inside FPSC - or any engine for that matter.

Getting back to work now.

Plan on modeling upstairs too?

I noticed you said it's a -400, the upper deck looks a bit short for a 400 model, closer to a -200.

Almost forgot, if you want to save on polys you can make a SP version:

Yes but those models dont appear to be internally modelled, or am I wrong? I also think I can do a better job at texturing them to be more life-like. Just my opinion though.

Hmmm, looking at the shots of the cockpit he made...looks A LOT roomier than a real 747's cockpit.
