so i have 3ds max 2010, and iam following this tutorial http://www.secondpicture.com/tutorials/3d/3d_modeling_of_a_chain_in_3ds_max_01.html
and i have the exact same settings as he has, (he didnt verify which light he used so i have a normal direction light, also my material is dark, as he didnt say which colour to use, and with a light material is looks badass.)
anyone able to help me? pic of my attemt in pic.

also, i THINK this laptop uses OpenGL by default, if this is the problem, is ther a way to change so it uses Direct X in max?

You have to pay for vray, mental ray comes free with 3dsmax.Press F10 and a window will pop up.Scroll down and find Assign Render, click it then click ... at Production and set it to mental ray.

customize>preferences>viewports to change to direct x in max but that doesn't account for the rendering not being quite right.

did you create the right light? did you chose metal as your shader type instead of blinn? did you use the .gif he said to use for your reflection slot? it doesn't look like you finished either cause theres no bump on your object?

From you:
Quote: "(he didnt verify which light he used so i have a normal direction light"

From the site:
Quote: "Create a light (target directional) and turn shadows on. Place the light so that it points directly downwards. "

new to this whole reading thing?

You didn't follow the tutorial. Granted, it's a poorly written tutorial. Make sure you read everything, and you can ask a question in case the awful directions like "Maps: Reflection: Raytrace (REFMAP.gif)" don't make sense. I did a Google search for REFMAP.gif and found the image he was talking about. I did the rest of the tutorial and my image looks like his.

He also skips some steps, at least one that I can find. He very obviously turned down the shadow density of his light because the shadow isn't pitch black. You can do this by selecting the light, then on the right rail going to the shadow parameters section, and setting density to 0.5.

This tutorial is also a joke because he tells you to weld a bunch of cones together. What the hell? Not only is that an assanine method, but CONES? A cone with the same radius at the base as the tip is called A CYLINDER. Regardless, the easy way to model a chain link is to make a torus, right click > convert to editable poly, select the top half of the polygons, and just drag up. Viola`. A perfect chain link.

For reference, here's what I came up with following the tutorial. Applied a lattice modifier to the middle one, and put a small reflection on the floor:
