Just got a new AMD Athlon 1.8ghz, very nice and much faster then my old 400mhz. Never-the-less, my CPU FSB Clock is stuck at 100 and everytime I set it to 133 in the Bios and startup it resets just before the Windows loading screen. Setting it back to 100 will fix this and although it's still good, I just don't think I can settle for a 1.15ghz CPU when I should have 1.8ghz.

Has anyone had this problem before and do they know why it would happen?

It could be the ram. Some sticks doesn't like the higher speed of 133mhz and will only run at 100.

Try memtest http://www.memtest86.com/ at 133mhz and see what happens.

I'm 99% sure it isn't because I got the RAM, CPU and Motherboard all second-hand from my brother who used them fine at 133 in his computer. The only thing that possibly comes to my mind is that I haven't got the greatest gfx card: Radeon7000+. I'm not sure if this would affect it though.

I'm sure your graphics card isn't the problem.

Firstly (and i'm not trying to be patronising) I am assuming you have an Athlon 2500+ (which I think runs at 1.8Ghz) and not the Athlon 1800+ (which doesn't).

Secondly, did you upgrade your mobo when you bought the new CPU? This is the most likely culprit

ah, iv'e seen this on a lot of socket a mobo's.

set it in the bios, and sometimes it forgets, restarts alot, or gets overiden by the jumper (even if you set it not to).

just find the clock speed jumper on your mobo (i hope you have the instruction book that came with it ). normally closed would be 100, and open would be 133 (although sometimes it is different).

If its a 2500+ you would want the bus @ 166 and the multiplyer @ 11

The most likely problem here is you've set the BIOS without setting the Motherboard ... most boards you'll find a set of 3 or 4 micro-switchs just below the Ram next to the FDD Connector.

Certain combinations of this will give you the FSB you want.
Whoever you've got to make sure the Ram & Processor are BOTH capable of the FSB speed that your setting.

100Mhz SDRAM will be able to use multiples of 50 (50/100/200/300/400)
133mhz SDRAM will be able to use multiples of 66 (66/133/266/333)

DDR/DDR2 Ram and RDRAM however tend to work seperate to this and at given speeds only rather than multiple speeds ... most of these generally won't work on anything other than the given speed they were made for.
PC1800 133
PC2100 233
PC2700 300/333
PC3200 400

so really there are alot of factors which could be causing your system to simply reboot ... but its more than likely the motherboard switchs not set properly.
That said my motherboard doesn't work in 133FSB mode, my AthlonXP is capable of it and my SDRAM is too - but when i set it, just refuses to work.

But then its a cheap Chaintech Via VT8328-686/B motherboard so i've always just figured that the motherboard is bugged.
