Thought I would make one thread with all my 3D model WIPs, as that seems to be the done thing.

I've been working on this twilek model for some time, I'm mostly happy with it but would like some feedback.

It has 2434 polys. It has been UVed but no texture yet.

Still working on my Storm Trooper, reduced the polys to 6533 from 9438. I have lots of college work to do so might put it on hold for a few weeks.

Nice. Reminds me of when I was 12(ish), making my Twi'lek as dressed down as possible in the Jedi Academy Demo.

Good detail

For anyone that doesn't know what a twi'lek is. They are in Star Wars and they have two head tails, they are soft and hang down from there head. The model has not been rigged yet so the head tails are not in position yet.

I haven't decided if the clothes will be a texture or modelled. This is kind of a base mesh for adding the clothes details too as I plan to make a few different designs.

I was just wondering if people thought it looked in proportion.

Here is another render this time real time (truespace7.6 - workspace)with verts showing.

Im also working on the gun (1887 polys) for the trooper. Does anyone have any advice on texturing guns?

I'm also working on a rancor. This is very low poly for now (1321 polys). I was hoping to get Zbrush and to give it some high details then normal map the low poly version, but funds are kind of low at the moment.

he he no problem =), I just thought after your comment that may be not everyone would know what a twilek is, it was a bit presumptuous of me(they do look a lot like horns lol). Thanks for the feedback.

My first space ship! Thought I'd try a simple one first.

Tie fighter: 2096 polys, not UV mapped yet. There is still plenty of details to put in. Modelled in Truespace7.6

I bought ZBrush 3.5r3 and im hoping to make some proper textures and normal maps for my models. It could take some time before I have anything to show for it, but it will be fun I hope.

Here is the nearly final version of the Rancor it has a texture and normal map. 7136 verts. This is an real time render with truespace7.6 The high poly (1.7 million polys) zbrush version I made the normal map with is posted next.

Is it worth entering this in the out of this world compo or should I put it in a scene first?

I think you should make some scene, just a cave or something ( rancorn's natural habitat )

The inter-galactic space flight has been booked on Dathomir Rancor tours, so I can get references for a Rancor's natural habitat (joking... seriously they charge to much, ill be flying with RyanScare ).

The guide says Dathomir is notorious among spacers for its two primary exports - Rancors and witches. Though the planet boasts stunning natural beauty, nothing can overcome its reputation as the place of animal savagery and dark magic. Dathomir's varied terrain includes green forests and yellow deserts, tumbling waterfalls and oozing tar pits.

First go at a scene. It is supposed to be a cave lit with torches. Any Ideas for a better scene?

Excellent work, you have a real eye for detail. Would be great to see these in a SW fan game, if your not a coder yourself then colaborating with one is something you should definitely consider. Especially, if you are working on a portfolio.

I imagine the FPSC community would eat these up too, I wonder what the legalities are of selling your media through the TGC store.

Thanks for your encouraging response Van B. I too would like to know the legalities of selling my media through the TGC store, if they would consider it sellable, I would defiantly be happy to. I've got to pay for ZBrush some how, as it just went on the overdraft lol.

I plan to make a star wars game as you can probably guess from the media I'm producing. It is mainly for learning how to program. I've heard an expression used when talking about writing books "Write what you know", so as I know Star Wars, that is what I'm doing.

I am doing a Computer degree part time through the open university, but most of that is in Java and not very game oriented. I've been using Dark Basic pro for a short time and also purchased Leadwerks, but I'm struggling with these, as I'm used to thinking in OOP .

I'm quite happy how the rigging stage turned out for the rancor, now it is time to learn to animate lol. Here is my first go at a rancor on a treadmill.

My kids keep asking me to make some Star Wars models so we can create our own game. Just have to clone myself to do that task so I can stay on all the other projects I'm on.

You have certainly given us some inspiration to attempt it ourselves.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Make sure if you clone yourself it isn't an evil clone! What sort of game do your kids want to make?

I think I'm going to set my game in the original trilogy era. My game style inspiration is Fable2, Simpsons Hit and run and Oblivion. It will be free roaming, but with clearly defined zones and progression, with mini games that are replay able, but also a main story driven mission progression.
I'll start with designing the mini games that will start off as separate demos that can be incorporated in the main game. That way ill have small programs to learn to program with, and not a huge monster to begin with. So before anyone sighs and thinks that I'm like some people who are new to programming who want to make an MMO on their first project, don't despair lol. You have to start somewhere =). I think it is a good idea to aim big but start small!

My kids are of various ages. Three of them are 10+, one has graduated and moved out, and one is only a year old. They all love Star Wars. Right now we have a WW2 theme game in dev, an Egyptian theme game (the wife's project) in dev, and have 4 others that are on the drawing table- maze/puzzle, RPG theme, one sci-fi, and modern. Our WW2 game will have 15-20 levels, with 2 sequels already being drafted out. Same with our sci-fi and my wife's game.

One of the games we really enjoyed playing together was the first Dark Forces, and that was where my kids thought we could make our own game. There were a lot of add-on maps for that, but it is nice when we have the kids in the dev side learning how to make a game and they have a part of the development. Our oldest made a maze game and used it as a computer project in his school- got an A on it for thought and detail.

I agree with your method of the small demos. We do the same thing, then polish them and place in order to create an actual story plot. Some times I can create the story from start to finish, other times I have to do a demo or three before I come up with the plot. Depends on my time and what tasks are on my plate.

In any event, your work has been great. We've been watching this topic and the detail you put into these are very good.

Cheers

Wow mike sounds like you have got quite a production team there! I too got in to gaming with Dark Forces also x-wing was a major foundation to my gaming interests. I didn't know there were other maps for DF. When dark forces 2 came out I used to try and make my own maps for that, I never got any playable maps finished but had a lot of fun with it. I also tried to make maps for Jedi Knight 2. Good times!

My production team is just me, as my daughter is only 3 and my wife doesn't like video games. I don't think it will be long though till my lil one is joining in, she is always on the laptop and she said the other day that wants to build a robot lol.

Yeah my little one tried to model with the mouse in Milkshape the other day. His product looked better than mine I've been lucky with my kids and wife- they have always been supportive and insist on being a part of my development. Now I have them hooked. Had to buy a third machine just so I could work while they used the others.

I remember DF2, JK2, even Mysteries of the Sith. Then moved to Jedi Academy, even ran a server for a while. Yes, there were maps for DF, DF2, even MOTS. A lot for multiplayer, but some for single play. I have all the DF, JK, JK2, Academy, even Rebel Assault 1 and 2. I load these up once in a while to get some ideas for some levels, mainly in my Sci-Fi game. Amazing how much fun these still bring, and the ideas begin to form.

We had an idea to create Star Trek models, then create a Star Wars vs Star Trek game, just to see what it would look like. Would certainly be fun

I bought DF and all the JK games on Steam, they run really well on my acer web book. My 64bit quad core pc tends to run these games way to fast or not at all so it is great that they run on a web book =)

Star trek vs Star Wars lol that would be a big showdown!

See my web site for the Star Wars games I play, hee hee just a small list.

Yes I plan to make a ATST and ATAT. I currently have in production the following vehicles; YT1300 (falcon), T16 sky hopper, y-wing, tie fighter.

The tie fighter is the only one that I've posted so far as it is the only one in a close to finished state, the others are a bit boxy.

At the moment I'm working on getting the twilek to the next stage(detailed coloured and wearing clothes).

I probably should finish a few before I start the next one lol.

Thanks guys! =)

The cantina was supposed to be just the exterior for a web banner I was asked to do, but I carried on to make the interior. It was a lot of fun and hard work. I need to find a faster work flow for buildings, but for a first go I'm happy with it. Still a lot to do to get it finished.

Here is the web banner I made:
