I need to know:

Are the exe files stand-alone, or must you distribute a run-time dll with your program?

Where is a GameCreators game? If they made this, where is something they made with it? If it's so powerful, where's their state of the art game?

Why are there no samples in the demo? I fail to see why there are no Usage Examples distributed with the demo. It makes me wonder if there are any usage examples. Are there?

Are there any distribution tools, such as setup tools to install your game from CD onto a computer?

Distributation tools? No... that'd be rather cheap really... DB Pro is a programming language, not a game production suite. It sticks to what it's good at.

DarkBasic is a good front end to DirectX, then, and that's it. Without line of site functions, and pathfinding functions, and OOP (especially this), you'll be hard pressed to make anything more than curiosities and arcade games. "Build your own FPS", I don't think so. "Submit your demo" (to help sell DB with no compensation), I think not! There needs to be some truth in advertising on this site.

Still, it is a good front end to DX, and it will probably be a good toy for kids to learn some programming skills.

Hey Gamecreators! Give me DBPro for free and I'll send you a demo o help you sell your software. That's more than fair compensation, no?

Either write your own, or in the case of pathfinding, examples are already in the code snippets library. Pathfinding is a matter where you need to have control over the code, something a built-in function couldn't provide. Line of sight is pretty easy to do, just use intersect object a few times. If it intersects the level in a shorter distance than it intersects the enemy or whatever, then they are out of site, if not then they are visible.

StarWraith, The Magic Land, the Evolution demo, Virtual Insanity and 3D Mahjong were all written in DarkBASIC, these are more than just "curiosities and arcade games".

Buy DBP or download the FREE Alienware Trial version and use it to write a game for the Alienware competition - if it gets first prize , it'll win a £1500-odd state-of-the-art PC, enough compensation for you? (Second, third and a few others get various TGC software).

can anyone spell T R O L L ? , why would BASIC need OOP structures?, even small children know this isn`t what BASIC is about, BASIC never was about anything like that, if it had it would be C++ with verbose syntax, if you want OOP then write the main loop in a C++ dll and then use the returned values to position and run the graphics every sync, BASIC stands for Beginers All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code, that makes it possible for hobbyist programmers and Indi coders to create a game in a time period less than decades, thats the idea behind it, if you want OOP then download Dev C++ and learn DirectX, see you in two months time with your first coloured sphere demo, I`ll write my demo now.

sync on:sync rate 60:hide mouse:autocam off
dim a(2,1000)
for i=1 to 1000
make object sphere i,1
color object i,rgb(rnd(255),rnd(255),rnd(255))
a(0,i)=rnd(10)
a(1,i)=rnd(10)
a(2,i)=rnd(10)
next i
color backdrop rgb(255,255,255)
do
for i=1 to 1000
position object i,rnd(5),rnd(5),rnd(5)
next i
position camera 5,100,5
point camera 0,0,0
t=timer()
repeat
for i=1 to 1000
turn object left i,a(0,i)
pitch object up i,a(1,i)
roll object right i,a(2,i)
move object i,1
next i
sync
until timer()>(t+6000)
loop

and it took me two minutes, not two months.

Without line of site functions

There is a line of sight command:

You cannot put down a language just for the fact it has no line of sight. The same with pathfinding. Things like that are more part of a game and each game has a way of doing so. You code that sort of thing yourself.

Otherwise you'd get lazy

Theres no place like 127.0.0.1

mentor,

If basic languages are not OOP how do you explain vb6 and vb.net, the latter being truly OOP?

Not trying to start a flame war but I do wish dbp was more OOP inclined. They have started a little with User Defined Types.

peace

VB6 is barely basic, at a glance you could take it for some none mainline high level language, and MS never did follow the intent of BASIC anyway (beginers? all-purpose? symbolic?), and .net I haven`t seen but I imagine it looks more like C# or Java than BASIC from comments I have read in other forums.
if I wanted to code in C++ or variants then I would, I don`t so I use DB since it IS oldschool BASIC, OOP is overated and several language researchers are questioning the benefits, I can think in psuedoBASIC, I wouldn`t even attempt to do so in C++ or one of it`s dialects.
BASIC is a oft neglected language and misunderstood, it has a different goal to OOP, BASIC is for beginers, yes I can code in C++ and use structures and objects, but with some simple rules you can get just the same effect in BASIC, and me not being a rocket scientist type coder, I would rather wobble around in BASIC than slam into invisible moving walls repeatedly at 100mph in C++ , and have you ever tried to invoke a textured cube in C++ and move the camera as the object rotates?, my arguement is that if you want OOP then use an OOP language, don`t try to rewrite BASIC, it is aimed at casual new coders (they are the target market after all methinks) and some diehard not-to-good oldies like me, and suits us just fine, go hassle the C++ community for an easy to use DirectX command library , leave BASIC alone

Types and functions are not BASIC, but DBP has them.

Functions were available in the original BASIC language. It's just that they were cut out in some later BASICs to reduce the size of the interpreters/compilers

how on earth can you do any real programing with out Functions????

OOP is good tool, but you do not need it just make life easy.

yes you can make DBP have OOP like VB6 do`s but thats not going to be the same type of OOP then you get in java or C++.

DrOcCuLt: you learn to code functions are not ordained by God, you can learn to code in any language, you just need the practise, you can write perfect code in anything, it doesn`t have to have OOP, thats just this years fashion more than a requirement, try

Forth
Fortran
Algol
Lisp
BASIC
COBOL
LOGO
ASM
C

none of those are OOP but it didn`t stop anybody from writing code in them, it`s more how easy it is to code the required software in the language you use and how profficient you are with it, most people can manage "hello world" in any language after 5 minutes with the manual, but a full blown app or game?, no chance (unless they have a brain the size of a planet or the language has a "make game" command).

To each his own I guess, but IMHO I'd much rather have an Object Oriented BASIC as opposed to a procedural one. I grew up on all of the procedural flavors of BASIC starting back on the Atari 400 and moving up from there later on to QBASIC. I didn't explore any OO version until vb6 (was kinda out of programming for a few years) I was blown away by the changes. It made so much sense, especially on a windows system, to drop the "pure procedural" and go to an "Event Driven" way of doing things. I just think it's way more powerful, and way more organized. VB.NET utterly blows away all previous forms of basic hands down, and until you have tried it and seen that it's the quintessential form of basic no one can speak. Finally a form of basic on par with C++/C# - everything is an object. But when all is said and done the oo versions of basic are just really small blocks of procedural code wrapped in method, functions and events - plain and simple.

Happy coding, whatever the flavor

Easily. Use gosubs. That is what the CPU does. All your lovely need functions are just turned into the assembler equivilent of gosubs (JMP) in machine code.

Functions just make it neater and easier for high level programmers.

I'm not old enough to have studied the origonal basic language, but I have used,
atari 8 bit basic
trs 80 basic
tibasic
apple 8 and 16 bit basic
msbasic 1.0 yeah, thats right been a pc boy from the begin
gwbasic more or less msbasic

I wasn't introduced to functions until I studied pascal in high school, but I knew from day one I loved them.
