Try out these-

3DS MAX 2010 -too expensive
Blender -Too hard
MilkShape -Easy but lowpoly
SketchUp -Not so very good

well it does not have any graphical plugins like normal maps or spec maps to apply to your model but this can be done with in your materials. but yes your right.

The Quality of the models , has NOTHING to do with the program, it all depends on how good you are at using the software, and making the 3D models,.

When someone wants to start, to learn modeling, please don't recommend or even mention 3dsMax as a possible alternative. Even at the student price, it's a ridiculous option for someone starting out. They should learn to drive the driving instructors car first. Then, when they know what they're doing, they can decide if they want to buy the Mercedes Benz. I've never seen so many people parking their Mercedes in cardboard boxes. (using a 3500.00 modeling program on a 50.00 game engine)

Start with one of the free programs, Blender or Wings3d, or even MilkShape at 25 or 35 (It was 25.00 when I bought it). There is also Anim8or and DeleD 3d. Google any of these and you'll find them.

I tried other free alternatives as well and then after using the MilkShape trial version, decided it was best for me. And Essal hit the nail on the head. It's the modeler, not the software that makes a great model.

Welcome to the forum and I hope you enjoy modeling as much as I do.

Brian.
