It's cl$(), not cl$ because it's a function.

a$=cl$()

No. All it does is read the entire line that was used to start your program, including any extra options that it has been called with.

It's then up to you to decipher and deal with the options.

Thus, you can use it to, for example, run in 800x600 normally and 320x200 if you launched it with the extension '-lores' from the command line or a Windows shortcut .
