i was board this morning so i have made a simple metal detailing tutorial for you,it may not be the right way to do it but its one of the ways i work.you will need a base metal texture to get started,if you need a tutorial for that then visit my site theres one there.

Nice one, thanks for posting.

Might help encourage people to draw their own weapon textures, I always prefer hand drawn textures on weapons - they seem more realistic at the end of the day.

Nice tutorial, might also pay off to add a very subtle noise layer on low opacity for definition.

Or in gimp, lighting(add light) then BUMP MAP! Just Kidding. Don't do a bump map on a texture, though in 2d it looks cool.

Thanks for the tutorial henry I recall you recommending your tutorial on your website on my EAI weapon thread, checked it out, and here's what I got. But I wasn't too happy about it. The question I wanted answered most was: How did you achieve the shape in the middle of the texture? That rounded rectangle sort... Anyways, my result is attached, tell me what you think...

just make a new layer & then use the shape tool.
