How do all these people afford 3ds max man.
Thats what im baffled at.
Are you torrenting it?
It's just there's too many people (at least 30 on this forum)
that have shelled out $3.5k for Max

I started on Ac3d, but lack of animation made me dabble back n forth from milkshape. That was about 2 years ago, now thanks to a loan and deal with Ict, that will end June this year, i have Photoshop Cs4 and Max 9. I bought Zbrush seperatly for £320 i think.

The jump from £80ish to £2XXX was unbelivable. Thanks to the to the deal i had with them and extremly large ICt budget, i was allowed full licenses for each at a reasonable price.

For a first time user, i recommend milkshape, then blender. If you see your going some where with this, then buy a student license for Max or maya.

play around get used to the Ui's

Rhino3D, every version .

It's a highly technical and accurate NURBS package, but very easy to use. It's actually more like using a 2D cad package like TurboCAD.

I have 3DS Max 9, which I use for hierarchy animation and tidying up normals and welding etc. I'm not sure if I've even made a model in any other package but Rhino that I could call a model. So, if all these packages mystify you, give Rhino a try for technical modelling (making weapons, vehicles, buildings etc). I usually make a NURBS base model, then convert it to a mesh and vertex edit it.

Attached a screenshot if anyone is interested.

I like Animation Master. I've had it for years, but never realized just how powerful, and easy, spline based modeling is. And, once you get all the cool plugins, like Sweeper and the .lwo and .obj exporters, things get real easy real fast.
Not too expensive either, about 300 bucks.

Oh you could spend a fortune on buying modelling packages, and you never get everything that you would like. You have to Import, export to get everything. I'm sure that Max doesn't have everything that ZBrush 3.5 has, but also the other way around. Any beginner should start with Anim8or though, it's free, and has the easiest approach of any other package. I learned it in about 10 minutes. Then you just improve to the point where you get something else.

@Pincho Paxton
Yup, i started that a year ago and im still stuck on it becuase of the ease. i can shell out more models in anim8or in a week, then blender in a year.
It is very user friendly.
I want to move to more complex modeling software but i hate blender with a passion ( no offense ) and anything else that anim8or doesnt offer is over $100 which for me is barely doable.

off topic:
blah this coffee is nasty, gonna go make another pot.

C4D. a full license is around £700 but a educational license is only £100. it is super easy to use and the results are amazing!

a quick google image search showed a lot of amazing results.
here's one:

honestly, i was able to archive something just as good in 5-6 hours!

Well, I use blender for everything. It has a hard interface, but you will adjust and in the end I find it way better than anim8tor or something like that. Just wish they would support N-gons ( 2.5, make me happy )

Haha, I don't drink coffee, too young, even though its sorta nice. ( Use blender for everything --> Sick idea in mind ) But I mean in modeling, but it would be nice if I could make my own clothes in blender and then wear the to school.

I use Wings3d at its probably just as easy as animator to use, its extreamly simple but powerfull, supports Uv but not animatiom. I use Milkshape for animation(Well actually i got it a couple of days ago so havent had to much time to mess about with it).

When you first get anim8or you are supposed to do the Eggplant tutorial. It teaches you almost everything in 10 minutes.

Blender looks far more imposing than it really is. Just learn the basic keyboard shortcuts and it becomes a breeze.

If you're not the type to make use of shortcut keys then it takes longer to get the hang of, but myself, I work with one hand on the mouse and the other on the keyboard for just about anything from photoshop to blender to excell so it just fits naturally to me.

That being said, I don't think there is a single thing that I've wanted to do that Blender just flat out cannot do one way or another. I'm sure other suites may do some things easier or more efficiently but there is nothing I've had to just give up on and say oh well, my software just can't do that.

using 3ds max - modelling
ms3d - making poly groups (since i dunno how to in max)
then lithunwrap - unwrapping (again, due to lack of max experience)
then ms3d uvmapping (again, i dunno how to in max)
then max for checking textures (much easier than ms3d) and retopising and such.

Wings 3d.
It is extremely powerful and free.
I can make anything I put my mind to with it.
I use fragmotion for rigging and animating

I like wings, but I wish I knew a free program that let me use it with an interface like ac3d, and then back to an interface like wings. I also use mapscape for some stuff, like boxy meshes that dont need to look organic.

Zbrush+AC3D+MakeHuman(zbrush for poly reduction and texturing,AC3D for clothing, animation, and non-character, MakeHuman because building from scratch is counter productive).

Just making sure this gets noticed on page two as well, because I know with awful threads like this the replies barely get read, and people just want to put their mindless input in for no reason other than ego. HEY LOOK AT ME I USE 3DS BLENDER FOUR DEE. THIS INFORMATION WON'T HELP YOU AT ALL BECAUSE THIS IS ENTIRELY PERSONAL PREFERENCE AND I KLUDGE TOGETHER 8 PROGRAMS WHEN ONE I HAVEN'T PUT IN THE EFFORT TO LEARN DOES THEM ALL!

[ModEdit] Grow up [/ModEdit]

Never mind that we have this thread about once a week. Never mind that it never actually helps the person asking the question. Never mind that this is a subjective question which is the reason why the rules are in place. Never mind!

Lol had a bad day Quoth? Jeez. I agree the thread isn't needed but, its christmas, relax a bit.

If you're looking for something quick and dirty to get started with try out Wings 3D. See what your skills are like, and take it from there. Wings is a good starting point as it's free and simple, it'll let you get to grips with 3D and then you can figure out on your own if you need something more powerful.

We cant really suggest any other app to you because this is a sensitive subject entirely dependant upon your skill, effort and creativity. I only suggest Wings 3D because I see it as step 1 for anyone looking to get into 3D modeling. It'll give you a taste of whats to come, and help you to determine what direction you want to go.

hey. hey. HEY LOOK I AGREE THAT THIS REPLY IS USELESS BUT HERE'S ANOTHER SUBJECTIVE OPINION. IT WON'T HELP YOU AT ALL MORE THAN ANY OTHER REPLY!!!!!!

Ok, I'm just going to tell you how to do it. "Get" 3ds max or "get" Maya. You know how to do it, and if you want a leg up on the situation you HAVE to do it. I am NOT telling you to pirate 3ds max. Do NOT do that. GET THE PICTURE?! Both are amazing programs. 3ds max has a better designed interface, but both have more features than you could ever literally learn how to use. You don't want anything else. Blender is a joke. Wings is a joke. Always start off with the best stuff.
