If you take away their appear script, they'll just stand there. They won't even rotate to look towards the player. Otherwise, maybe try blocking out (semi-colon) the information in their .fpi file that tells them to attack the player.

I just use x10 for that since you can make neutral characters

Cover your eyes while playing. If you can't see them, then they can't see you and therefore should not be able to attack you.
