Okay, I reaaaaaaaaaaally hope this belongs in Geek Culture, because every other thread seems to get locked. (even after I read the guidlines).

Anyway, my favorite type of music is war music (dreamevil, sabaton) satanic rock (disturbed mostly) and sad music. Unfortunately, I couldn't find much of the later and I'm wondering what there is. I'll throw some songs out there that really spoke to me.

Illusion - Vnv Nation
Room of Angels - *coughidontwanttoreferancethisbandbecauseitisntabanditsfromsilenthillthereisaiditcough*

So yeah, feel free to throw out your ideas, thanks!

P.S: Am I the only person who plays music videos mentaly or is that a common method toward music addiction?

To Live Is To Die - Metallica. There's this little acoustic bridge in the middle and then some strings kick in. Combined with the tinny, bleak sound of the album, it's a lonely sounding song.

Athlon64 2.7gHz->OC 3.9gHz, 31C, MSi 9500GT->OC 1gHz core/2gHz memory, 48C, 4Gb DDR2 667, 500Gb Seagate + 80Gb Maxtor + 40Gb Maxtor = 620Gb, XP Home

Mad World(Gary Jules cover)

Hyper Chondriac Music - Muse

Nothing Else Matters - Metallica

Coil - Opeth

Hope Leaves - Opeth

Daddy - Korn

Wings for Marie - Tool

10,000 Days and Part 2 - Tool

I also like sad songs. Not just because they are sad, but they tend to have a purer emotion than, say, an angry screamy song. At the end of Daddy, Jon breaks down and cries...Then again it is a song about him being molested as a child.

Fanfanfan - Joakim Thåström (Swedish)

I like this song, it makes me depressed though, as I can relate to it.

In case you don't understand the lyrics, here they are (translated by me):

I thought Evergrey's song "When the Walls Go Down" was quite sad, because the whole album (Inner Circle) was a story, I think you could say the whole thing is sad.

And they're flipping brilliant. They're another band that proves that some of the best metal comes from Sweden.

Warning, song contains religious themes.

Seasons In The Sun - Terry Jacks 1974

Really I never listen sad music, just quite the opposite, the happiest music on earth! Although I am a fan of all forms of music and this (besides mad world) is one of my favorite my sad songs. I REALLY would pay attention to the lyrics...it's sad...

First off, Venge is so right about Wings For Marie (esp. Part 2)

I actually think When Somebody Loved Me from Toy Story 2 is genuinely a very sad song. Randy Newman definitely knows what he's about. Of course Tom Waits (Anywhere I lay my head) is just amazing - one of my favourite vocalists (maybe Mike Patton beats him because of his versatility but apart from that...). The end of that song isn't so sad, but the main part is just pure emotion and his voice works so well with it.

I'm also a huge fan of Death Cab for Cutie, from their newer stuff like Cath back through loads of other amazing ones. Was going to list a few but I remembered

TINY VESSELS!!!!!!!!!!
It's an amazing song. So sad. I really identify with it as well because when I first got the album I was going out with a really good looking lass who I just wasn't feeling the spark with and I felt really guilty about it because she was really into me... Ironically it lasted a while and by the end the tables had completely turned lol...

Another great song from that album is A lack of color, and probably one of their saddest lyrically as well as musically is What Sarah Said, from Plans, which is about watching a loved one slowly die in hospital.

In fact I would thoroughly advise just getting a few Death Cab albums and working through them, but I'll list a few more decent songs:
The Ice Is Getting Thinner (Narrow Stairs)
20th Century Towers (Stability EP)
All is full of love (originally by Bjork) (Stability EP)
No joy in mudville (We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes)
Champagne From A Paper Cup (You Can Play These Songs With Chords/Something About Airplanes)

Sorry this is taking years because I can't help listening to all of the songs I post - I've spent about half an hour/40 minutes on this post... time to move on I think.

Personally I think that metal is possibly the most emotional and powerful music there is. When there's a combination of clean/raw vocals, symphonic backing, varied parts and crushing riffs then it doesn't get much better.

Take a look at some Nightwish, they have some beautiful songs.

The Islander - Nightwish
Halo - Machinehead
Deafening Silence - Machinehead
Descend the Shades of Night - Machinehead
The Burning red - Machinehead

Those are probably some of the saddest songs I've heard and they are very powerful.

Sonata Arctica - Shy

Sonata Arctica - Letter to Dana (sorry, couldn't find any good sound quality of this on youtube).

Sonata Arctica - My Selene (low bitrate? And yes, there's a tad more power than ballad to this one, still not the merriest song though).

Sonata Arctica - Shamandalie

Sonata Arctica - Tallulah

Sonata Arctica - Gravenimage

Sonata Arctica - Under Your Tree (poor quality)

Sonata Arctica - Good Enough is Good Enoug

Sonata Arctica - The Misery

Sonata Arctica - Draw Me

Epica - Safeguard to Paradise

Epica - Higher High

Epica - Linger

Epica - Trois Vierges

Nightwish - Forever Yours

Nightwish - Sleeping Sun

Nightwish - Swanheart

Nightwish- Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan

Nightwish - Away (again, couldn't find any proper quality)

Nightwish - Two for Tragedy

Nightwish - Eva

Nightwish - Meadows of Heaven

Within Temptation - Our Farewell

Within Temptation - Hands of Sorrow

Within Temptation - Say My Name

Within Temptation - Overcome

Within Temptation - Somewhere

Within Temptation - The Swan Song

Within Temptation - Aquarius

Within Temptation - All I Need

Within Temptation - Forgiven

Luca Turilli - Altitudes (ugh, who normalized this one?)

Luca Turilli - Dolphin's Heart

Rhapsody - Wings of Destiny

Rhapsody - Dragonlands River

Rhapsody - Il Canto del Vento

... Ok, enough with the power metal bands already. Here are some miscellaneous sad songs, some from movie themes, some from other groups that I listen to.

Denean - Without Horizon

David Bowie - Cygnet Committee (yeah, I think it's got a sad emotion)

Celtic Circle - Elysium (awsome song, anybody know who actually wrote it? I haven't been able to find out for ages).

Era (Eric Lévi) - Mirror

Era (???) - Avemano

Evanescence - Before the Dawn

Evanescence - Hello

Evanescence - Anywhere

Evanescence - Listen to the Rain

Evanescence - Ascension of the Spirit

Kitaro - Symphony of the Forest

Mozart - Requiem - Introitus and Kyrie

Mozart - Requiem - Lacrymosa

Pink Floyd - High Hopes

Ah, come on, there's an enormous amount of songs fitting the criteria. Maybe I'll edit in some more later, but now I've been doing this for two hours already.

Metal bands have their moments. I'm currently listening to Anathema, who are death and doom metal (dependent on what album you're listening too. The album I am listening to is Hindsight, which is just a collection of semi-acoustic versions of some of their songs, it's very mellow with a couple of sad songs, though of course the album isn't metal itself.

Though more melodic forms of metal may have sadder songs - Evergrey for example, which I posted higher up, has sad moments. Symphonic/Operatic metal too, Nightwish definitely have some sad ones, Dead Boy's poem for example. If you listen to My Dying Bride, you'll become depressed after a couple of songs (who are another doom metal band).

@Everyone else: I appreciate the effort, but I simply have no time to listen to all these songs Still, by all means keep posting for outsiders to observe.

I noticed that all my books I've written end up in the main/a vital character dying. H1N12012-the main character dies. Hell's Siren-the main character commits suicide. Book who shall remain nameless-One character lives. Btw, don't go looking for these titles, they're just for personal use.

Doh, most of the one's I was gunna say have been taken, so I won't say my suggestions by Metallica, Evanescence, Seether etc...

This is quite a sad song, one of my favourites too...

"Things my father said" by Black Stone Cherry - They played this song when I saw them at Download Festival last year and sent it sent shivers down my spine.

Not exactly 'sad', but beautiful and thought-provoking nonetheless:

Boards of Canada - [Unreleased] Audiotrack 01

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6XVMGs4Ar8

The visuals are nothing to do with the track, but they certainly don't detract from it later on (the Vietnam style burning person is quite a... well, disturbing sight, put with the music - even as rotoscoped animation)

Thanks guys, put I'm looking for songs I can put a video to. I don't know if anyone else does this, but my brain plays music vids in my mind when I listen to music. When the lyrics get mad, the subject gets pissed, when the song's sad, the subject's depressed and things are slower going.

I mostly think about Warhammer 40K if you've ever heard of it. Satanic music goes perfect with Chaos Daemons, Chaos Space Marines and Dark Eldar. Sad music usually goes with Imperial Guard guardsmen commiting suicide and dying en masse... etc.

Just saying, oh and here's a good song:

Cliffs of Galipoli by Sabaton, sorta like rock and sad...

It's at 4:58. Kickarse song! Never really felt it as sad, more like the ending to something really sad. Like the war is over and now we reflect on it.

I have to be in a certain mood to listen to their music, I have two albums.

Pink Floyd - When the Tigers Broke Free
Pink Floyd - Hey You
Black Sabbath - I won't cry for you
Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata
Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven
Temple of the Dog - Say Hello to Heaven

That last one might be a stretch, it might depend on if you know why the song was written.

You mentioned this earlier - I've never heard of anyone doing this before. OK my brain doesn't work visually anyway really (can't like picture stuff in my head or whatever), but I just focus on the music. I sometimes pick it apart like figuring out parts and harmonies and stuff but apart from that just listen to music for it's own sake.

Wow, Goodbye Blue Sky is good! (The video, not so much the song) A very good video animation is Land of Confusion by Disturbed (NOT the original Genesis one) although it isn't that sad, per say.

@Takar: That song made me cry so hard! That's the saddest song I've ever heard!
