I found this model in cavebrain model library
[href]www.cavebrain.com[/href]
Its a mob boss in mdl format.
So i downloaded it, made a simple program to view it
and guess what happened, it crashed. whats more it was a silent crash(no "error at line 5, object could not be loaded", it
just exited the program.
So i tried converting it to .x
i tried several proggies to convert it, all of which said it wasnt a valid mdl file(a5 binary mdls are a pretty common format arent they?).Eventually i found quick3d which loaded it without any quibbles.
Then guess what? it crashed when it exported.
I know the model works because ive viewed it in q3d.

So why doesnt it work??????

darkbasic only supports Half-Life Compiled Model (.mdl) format
personally i think that once one company uses a format then atleast out of some respect other companies should choose a different name because .mdl could stand for 1/18 different formats - although there are only really 2 that generally get mixxed up and GameStudio's .mdl format is not becomming popular.

but in general when something says .mdl support it generally means either Quake1 mdl or Half-Life mdl

personally i hate all the confusions that come about with people reusing names, mdx for example could be either Warcraft3 model or a Quake4 model or the uncompiled Jedi Knight/Elite Forces 2/Soldier of Fortune formats.

Well, like most things people like messing around with formats just to make all other ones incompatiable...

I had a look through a load of the files from the site, the file internal prefix is "MDL4". I have no other MDL files atm (no Halflife /Q3 installed these days) to compare against to check compatability.

According to the site these models have been compiled for use with A5. I imagine it is a proprietry format for exclusive use with that game authoring system. Perhaps the model editor from the A5 system could be used to export them back into a real model format?

Not even Deep Exploration would open them, although i've still not got around to sorting out the latest version.

If Deep Exploration opened them, chances are it'd crash before you could see the model anyways

So true Mouse... I still use the previous 3D Exploration out of prefference. I keep meening to try the latest version of Deep to see if it is more stable, but i've not got around to it. Deep has much better export options, if only it was stable.

As do I.

I've found really countless errors in Deep Exploration. I really don't understand how it got past Pre-Alpha stage with crashes when you drag folders, crashes when you double-click certain file formats, crashes when you have another D3D program running (that one's a bit more acceptable), crashes when you rotate a model sharply, etc... 3d Exploration has a few less features, but heck, at least it's somewhat stable.
