I know this has been asked before but I'm really interested in getting shadows into my games.

I have a few games on these forums using shadows on their objects, and i ccan never seem to get it to work despite the advice i have read.

could someone please give me a tutorial or atleast some help on how to create them.

Thanks

Hey Hexy, here's what you'll want to do -

Open up your FPS Creator folder, found at

C:\Program Files\The Game Creators\FPS Creator

Amidst the files and folders within, you should see a text document that should open in Notepad when you double-click it. The file is called "setup".

Once you have this open, you should see a plethora of different settings you can tinker with, here's the particular section you'll be dealing with

For recommended settings (for shadows), set lightmapquality= to somewhere between 80 - 100.

Doing this allows you to get those very defined and sharp shadows such as those in the screenshot I've provided.

Hope this has helped shed some light on your question

Cheers

I've noticed that this is a little taxing on FPS. I keep shadow quality lower. fences don't usually cast crystal clear shadows.

Thankyou very much Braden. I hope I can do something to repay you someday.

Edit:

It doesn't seem to work, should they be Dynamic lights?

Oh I'm terribly sorry, I'm not sure if this is the cause of you not getting results (if so I apologize), but I accidently left out a very important piece of information.

Any time you're changing anything in the setup file, FPSC has to be closed. Close the program, change the settings, save, and then open it up. Try that, and if that still does not work, I would suggest re-installing FPSC quickly and trying again (this time, ensuring the program is not running whilst changing it).

Dynamic lights are not needed though.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers

Nope shouldn't be that, here is what my setup looks like if you wanna try it out, please note I have hand done the options so it works with my high-end pc so just make sure you have a high-end pc or you may expericene lag, or what I call, super slow walking and super slow turning cause ive never seen propper lag in fpsc

Initially, when I attempted to change these settings for the first time, I also had problems with it not working. After re-installing it once though, upgrading to V1.16, making the changes and then opening FPSC, it worked. I really suggest trying that if you haven't.

In your Preferences, is Full Lightmapping selected or Quick Lightmapping?

I've checked best for quality.

But, when i did What Braden said to do, uninstall, upgrade then change it to the right settings, but i had changed it to 1000 by mstake, and only realised when i went to change it to something else.

I tried it and now, when waiting for test game to finish loading, It comes up with a critical error, something to do with Microsoft C++ visuals and then closes, does anyone know what might I have done wrong. The only annyoing thing is: I cannot directly edit the setup txt, Because it will not let me save anything into the program files folder so I have to save it in my docs then paste it there and I keep the origional as a backup in my docs.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,

it's probably set as read only, right click TGC folder, uncheck "read only", choose "aply changes to folders, subfolders and files" good luck

Bloody James, that light uses a decal/object to make it give the effect it's shining through dust.

Why not to do something yourself for once...?

I recommend this setting:

[GAMEMAKE]
lightmapping=1
lightmapold=0
lightmapshadows=0
lightmapambientr=0
lightmapambientg=0
lightmapambientb=0
lightmapsunx=0
lightmapsuny=-1
lightmapsunz=0
lightmapsunr=0
lightmapsung=0
lightmapsunb=0
lightmapzerorange=100
lightmapatten=32
lightmapmaxsize=-1
lightmapboost=4
lightmaptexsize=256
lightmapquality=128
lightmapblurmode=1
lightmapthreadmax=-1
bloodonfloor=1
imageblockmode=1

Or even lower.

Despite all the posts here doesn't look like Hexy123 managed to get what he was looking for!

@Hexy123

- Install a fresh FPSC
- Update to latest V116
- Edit setup.ini using notepad BEFORE opening FPSC
lightmaptexsize=512
lightmapquality=100
- Save and open FPSC
- Open build preferences and ensure lightmapping is best quality
- Make map and put some static lights in with different ranges
- Test game and you should have some nice shadows
- Decrease the amount of ambient lighting slightly using < key to make shadows appear more defined if necessary.

Hope you manage to get this working ok.
