How many triangles and vertex`s should there be on a character, weapon?

Reason i am asking is because ive startet on a Magnum.357 and the handle is about 200 vertics on one side and 200 on the other...

EDIT: This question is about FPSC and not models in general, i am asking this because i am worried about Framerate... And no one can give me a straight answer yet?

I have a related question; Not worth starting a new topic over...
I took a look at the free FPSC model pack - looks like lots of the objects have many MANY more faces than I'd have thought necessary. They look great and work fine and all, but 2000 faces for what is essentially a box seems a little... enthusiastic, lets say.
Are the other packs like that?
Am I getting in a twist over nothing?

Secretly competent too...
