The Essence of Live

This game is made my : Mark de Boer (aka Mgarand)

Why did i made this game?

basically because i was bored and i wanted to not make a zombie shooter. (nearly) everybody is making zombie games and i got enough of it, so i made this medieval/adventure game

Story

Ages ago, 2 wizards made a stone, called ''The essence of Life''. If someone owned this stone, he would have the eternal life. But the stone was so powerfull, the wizards died and the stone was gone.

200 years later, you want to find this stone, and get the eternal life. It will be a dangerous mission...

Good luck

some features

- unique game
- costum models (and retextures)
- 5 awesome medieval levels
- nice costum models (with shader)

I tried it out and it started very very promising....

....until I had to do a dozen succesfull jumps to continue.

I dont want to hurt your feelings but FPSC is probably the WORST game engine to do TR-style jump action. Shooters are alltogether not suited for this kind of playstyle, not even HQ games like Stalker dare to include more than a little jump here and there.

But maybe its just me and I am too clumsy for your game (although no TR game so far posed a problem - but hey...now that I think about it..Lara is played in 3RD PERSON and she can GRAB THE EDGES )

lol thanks for the comment, i know fpsc is a bad tr-style jump action engine, but i tried to get rid of the collision errors if you get stuck try ''c'' (crouch) to get free. I am bad in game where you need to jump, but i managed to do it . do you get collision problems?

Because if more have collission problems, i will delete the jumping parts

thats not strictly true... games such as half life include masses of jumping and they are some of the greatest games ever made...

if you go to the second pillar, look to your left, there is a kind of concrete bare. you need to jump with shift+spacebar.

Ok, tested it.

Shaders appear quite experimental, in this game less would have been more, I guess.

Spoilers ahead...

Finally, I'm sorry to say... but I find it unplayable. It looks good and I can see brilliant ideas, can't say I wouldn't see potential in it, really!!! But the level design is not thought-out to merge with gameplay, and seems not to be tested in any way - the collision problems take all fun out of it for me.

Hope this helps you to improve future designs and won't harm you, it's meant to be honest, constructive ciritcs

Ok

Level 1 is fine as it is, but I would suggest to at least consider a complete re-draw from scratch for level 2. Maybe leave the pillars out (use only planks) and strictly seperate the "jump area" from the "monster room". Just some thoughts that came to my mind

Good luck with this

It wasn't too hard... The jumping. But when the giant got there, I really didn't know what to do, becouse it was impossible to beat ont those bridge kinda things where you are jumping.

Since the jumps are doable now I could finish (and replay) the game and here is my review (in the usual GBU format).

The Good:
- Leveldesign. Especially the starting town was done very nicely. Different light settings made levels/places distinctive from each other.
- Atmosphere. Music, sounds, menu and load screens all helped to create more RPG feeling than the usual FPS game does.

The Bad:
- Monsters. Just cannon fodder, dumb but annoying but no challenge.
- Shields make no sense if you cant dual-wield. Sword/Shield blocking didn't have any effect although blocking animations where displayed.

The Ugly:
- Font. A different type would have made the game MUCH more fantasy
- Entity mix. Egyptian Guardians, Cyclops, Goblins, SciFi-teleporters....

Overall its a game with some shortcomings but also lots of potential to become BotB one day

Thanks mate, about the ''bad'' things,

Monster - Yup your right, it's hard to make a good AI for a monster
Shield - You can dual-wield. And they dont block i know, you can use it to smash.

Font - Well actually i dont agree, but i think it's my tast
entity mix- I like to add variaty to my game, but i don't know what's wrong with the coblins....

Thanks for your review, and i will look at the things you dont like

There was nothing wrong with the Goblins, its just the whole mix that didnt seem to fit - to my taste

For the monster AI there are workarounds (spoiler)
