What would be the best way to UV map a large game map? Would I have one giant image, seperate images, or a very high res image?.

If it hasn't exploded yet, I haven't touched it.

as the title says you mean an island. if it is just the ground itself then i would texture it as a whole. if you mean an island with trees rocks huts ect. these are all items that would be separately textured and placed on the island afterward.

Well, I would use multi-textures as if it were done with 1 massive texture it'll take alot of memory if using it for a game.

I just mean the ground texture. Also, what do you mean by multi textures?

Like if you want grass, tiles and a darker grass floor, you just have to make 1 texture for each and can be used in making any more maps, whereas 1 image for the texture it will have to be one unique texture for each island you make.

You might scope out TerSculpt by Van B for making the terrain. A youtube video showing it being used.

But, if you already have the island made, and you are just wanting to texture it, you might look into some texture blending. Basically, you have a grass texture, stone texture, sand texture(whatever textures really) and then blend them using an RGB map that tells what textures to use and where at on the island model. I found an old thread kind of discussing this. Good luck to you!

There's something in this room that makes you can't speak well.

Thanks, I tried Green Gandolf's terrain shader and it works perfectly.

One Way I see to do this (for me at least) is through Blender. Make the textures in some image editing program, make a flat grid by subdividing a plan several times in blender, UV map the model that you just made (should be a single island in the UV map), use the textures you made in texture painting the model, bake the texture if not already added to the UV map, and then using blender sculpt tool to add hills or ditches or so on, (oh and save the UV map and image while your at it, in case you forget). Good luck.

Typos, they can't live without me.

I've already did that but I've found that I doesn't work as well if you want really high quality terrain textures.

Well if your going to do it with alot of squares just make the texture make it seamless then keep it as it's usual uv before it is edited, just make sure to get rid of the ones which end upside down, then you'll have a whole island with a high-quality texture even if you zoom down.
