Firstly, nice work BFG, but I do agree that the hands don't quite look right.

Sorry, I'm afraid you're not correct. No one knows the full history of the term Tommy to refer to British soldiers but the first recorded use of the term goes back as far as circa 1750's. However, in 1815 the British War Office published a guide to filling out the Soldiers Pocket Book, a sort of ID card. The sample name used on that document was Private Thomas Atkins and that's generally where the term is considered to have come into common usage.
