Hello fellow programmers, my problem is simple, I am using 3ds Max 4.0 and exporting my models as .3ds. This means I cannot have any bone animation. I need a modelling program that can save bone-animated files that can be used in DBP. Any suggestions?

P.S. Im a cheapskate ,so please recommend free or cheaper programs.

A cheapskate that is using a $3495 dollar piece of software?

Suggest you look at CharacterFX or MilkShape 3D.

Cheers,

Rich

I'm amazed at the number of people on this board with 3DS Max!

I use Cinema 4D, free on a magazine, and I had to dig deep for the £6 for the mag!

@Zomerax

Ummm... Are you running P5, cos if you have, have you ever heard of a little file format called md3? The Quake 3 model format? Download one of the many md3 exporters for Max, and now you can export skinned models.

Any questions?

I can't do that.

Panda .X exporter for 3DS Max 4.0/5.0 now supports bone animation. It's a free download. Just search google for "Panda .X"

P.S. --It's no wonder he has to be a cheapskate after sinking $3500 into one program!

md3 Should work. If that doesnt, Invest the 40 for milkshape and CFX, they work great together.

I have to agree with RPGamer, milkshape and CFX are a good combo.

Regarding most of the people having 3DSmax, its scary how many people have pirated copies of it. Its not uncommon to see people pass it around chat rooms.

Scary thing is, I know people who own 3DSmax, milkshape, Truespace, and a few others and find the lower price software better overall, unless they are doing PRO work.

Oh but you can use bones, just not real ones.

You've got to make your bone hierachy out of real objects like boxes. Real bones don't appear to contain keyframe data, but manually created bones do.

Of course the next problem you've got is that .3ds won't carry mesh deformation data so you're stuck with 'wooden doll' animations.

Why not try looking for a .X exporter at www.maxplugins.de. I'm sure there are some good ones for MAX R4 (Look for the Panda one)
