Just trying to install upgrade 5 on a newly reformated and clean win98 install and having problems.

Windows has installed OK, stuck on detonater 45.23, Dx9.0b and installed DBpro. Problem is now I cant upgrade as when I run the installer I get "Runtime error 1511 display cannot be created due to invalid function parameter at line 0" after it extracts.

All the other patches I have tried (3.1 and 4) also cause similar errors.

I think its a DX problem but even reinstalling 9.0b doesnt help also DxDiag doesnt run with error: could not load riched32.dll

Any ideas before I go mad and reformat and reinstall the OS again?

sounds like DX install is no good, see if you can down-grade to 8 then reinstall 9.0b

RichEd is probably to do with the RichEditing system - probably would be easier to re-install Windows, especially as its to do with the core system.

It sounds like you probably lost some files on your hard disk, probably caused by a dirty shutdown.

You can also get some random goofy errors when your memory starts to go bad.

I would take it slow and start with a clean install. Make sure you get Windows installed, video drivers up to date, and then upgrade DX. Make sure that you can run all the tests in this condition and reboot a few times to make sure that everything is working fine before you start layering on the applications.

If you can boot without errors, shutdown clean, and run all the DX tests then you should be good to go.

I've been there many times where everything is going great and you do one more thing and the house of cards comes falling down.

I was going to recommend XP (because that's what I use). I thought it might be too radical a solution for you. It's definitley the best one. The first thing I did with XP was right-click on the Start button, select properties, and select "Classic Start menu". Then select "Customize". Under "Advanced Start menu options" select things like "expand Control Panel", "Display Administrative Tools" and anything else you want.

It makes XP liveable. On my laptop I tried to use the pure XP way and gave up after a week.
