I admire your patience and in no way wish to dampen your enthusiasm but a shipping crate is basically a big box = 6 polygons
To throw away polygons on such a piece of scenery is not advisable.
'Carmack' of ID (hope my spellings right) always quoted his golden rule which is:
Make a highly detailed model
Texture it and bump map etc
Capture a photo of this
Then make a low poly model and slap the new texture on it
You get a low poly model that looks highly detailed.
I use deled to make my models

He definitely needs more than 6 polygons to make this crate if he wants it to stand up to today's standards. Yes, he is using a lot more polygons than he needs to be, but I wouldn't advise turning this into a 6-poly box with a texture and normal map slapped on it. Keep those side details, just look into lowering the polygons needed to create them.
