I want to start a zombie horror game but do not know where to start. I would like any advice on how to start and any horror packs that are really good that feature many zombie characters etc. I have on pack in mind but still do not know what else to use nor where to start.

Thank you for any and all advice!!

If you want to make your game interesting don't make a generic zombie shooter.Use trigger zones and sounds to make the player scared.
Remember: One zombie that spawns in the right spot at the right time is more scary than a horde of zombies just walking to you.

MP 22(FPSC Gore Pack) is rather creepy. MP4 has some decent zombies I believe. And like Zay said, one really scary zombie placed in the right place is MUCH more scary than a bajillion(it's how you spell a fake number in my world ) zombies coming out of no where. Think about L4D vs HL2. L4D has a bunch of zombies, but it gets really old really fast. HL2's first zombie is like "OMG WAHT IZ TAHT?" Just keep that in mind.

@Ie shorte: I beg to differ. HL2 has no horror appeal what so ever, L4D neither (not that it was supposed to).

@Bozo907: Don't go for a lot of zombies, because the engine simply can't handle too many enemies. Use a few zombies, but give them a lot of health, so they pose some sort of threat. Try to avoid using human enemies unless you're fighting them seperately, because it wouldn't look good if you're fighting humans and zombies, yet the zombies don't attack the humans bla bla bla. Good luck!

Lighting is key!,be sure to do like dark areas then out of no where a zombie pop ups behind you or maybe there is one light that is flickering with a bunch of scary things but light is key!

Yes, lighting is extremely important as well as not just disturbing images, but disturbing experiences as well. For example, take something people are comfortable with or something people might like and then distort it to make people edgy. Like a little girl singing you can add an echo effect and maybe some backwards talking in the background and then have some zombies or ghosts disappearing and reappearing. I kinda did this in a test on one of my games I'm working on you can check it here and maybe come up with an idea or two.

To make a good horror game you need a good core pack like model pack 3, then you will probably get the gor pack and post apoc pack, then choose a theme and buy a pack to suit that theme. Look around in FPS FREE, Game creator store, Cosmic Prophet etc for some nice models that will help to fill your levels. And before you make your level be sure to get a rough plan otherwise you will get half way and just restart over and over.

Oh and i found HL2 much scary in that Abandoned Village. thats was very creepy for me.

Yep, nothing like exploding zombie skulls with a crowbar!

One technique I really like is to have a flickering dynamic light - when the player gets closer, the light switches off and the player is plunged into darkness. Then, it turns back on to reveal an enemy in front or behind the player. Combined with scary sound effects and ambience, it's a very effective technique

Take a look at the Official Guide, it has a section in there about what makes a good horror game.

the key to a horror is to make you feel like your safe, you got buddies to back you up, what can go wrong? Then BANG you get hit with some isolation, isolation is the key to a horror. AVP, dead space, metro 2033, F.E.A.R, they all do it, and make sure every noun and then they get a enjoyable break wheather it to be a cutscene or you reunite with your buddy from the start for some time. Man im like a bible...

Agreed, if you do it right, and succeed on a good atmosphere, the level can be scarier than games with enemies.

Quote: "HL2 has no horror appeal what so ever, L4D neither (not that it was supposed to)."

I know HL2 is not a horror game, but still, it's scarier than some "REAL" horror games, especially ravenholm and the poison zombies.

Quote: "I would like any advice on how to start and any horror packs that are really good that feature many zombie characters etc."

Zombie Apocalypse pack, by bond1 is the best around. It has zombies for scary horror games and zombies for fun mob action. I recommend that Propably everyone else here too. Gore Pack is also nice, it has zombies for asylum scenes and alike, and it also has freaky twisted monsters, wich are also (if used right) scary as hell!

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things that I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.
