Getting started with characters.. How do i go about this? I download the character shop. But I have no idea how to insert my image of the character... Is there other softwares? I need to build one?

I am very new to this..

I have my 3d world built.. my next step is how do i create a character and then load him into my world? I think i have the loading part..

The biggest thing is how do i build the character from ground up? what do i need? thanks

First you need a pic or idea of the character image. Then you have to get a sufficient modeler. (e.g. Truespace (free), Blender(free))

Get to learn how to model and model your character. Then you'll have to figure out how to texture (color) the character if your modeler doesnt do that already or is not very efficiant at doing that.

Once thats done if you modeler has no animation capabilities then you'll have to get and animateing software to do that (like Character Shop).

Once its all modeled, textured, and animated you load it into darkbasic pro (make sure you export it in either .x(direct x) or .3ds(3ds studio binary) format.

Then you assign certain keys to play the animations, move the character, etc. or code the AI for the artificial characters.

Creating characters is a very long process. What I do is make a functional program with cubes as temporary characters. Then I replace them with actual characters that I make later on so I dont have stop and start coding all the time.

The tools i use are :

Truespace (to model)
3ds max (To touch up models, apply textures and animate)
Photoshop (to create my textures)

Hope this helps!!

That's good advice.

I've never tried it myself... So I'm just wondering, when you make your textures in photoshop, how do you know how it will wrap round the character? Or do I have a misinterpretation of how texturing works.

Thanks

I've been wondering this for a while and It'd just help me out so much to finally get the answer to this, but when you rig the model with bones (in something like blender), and you name the bones, can you still refer to these bones and their names when programming something like ragdoll effects?
