It looks like it will be something released along with v1.17 there are some things Lee would like to introduce to make these work to full advantage and he is testing them as we speak, I can promise it would be worth the wait and it really will be a big improvement, meanwhile I am recreating the entire terrain segments to suit.

Wow rolfy, those look amazing... Do you have one of a grassy plain with forest in the background? That would be awesome because i'm going to make a survival horror game that takes place on a cleared out campsite, after i finish The Marsundle Residence.

At night i lay awake on my bed, gazing up at the stars, and i wonde-hey, where'd the roof go?

These particular terrains are 1250 poly's.
As these are planar the least poly's you can get using the entire map (40x40) is 3200 poly's with that kind of polycount you can get a little imaginative wth more poly's to create more detail even over the entire working area.
Redoing terrains completely. Currently working on an apocalypse/war terrain but will most definately try to cover all kinds of terrain including forests for fantasy, creepy, natural and blasted eventually.

After discussing with Lee I have decided to push the bar a little with these environments.
Will just create all skyboxes in Max from here on, it can take a fair amount of tweaking but the end result to me is much better. The new terrain segments now use the entire map 1600 segments in total they also use a 4096x4096 texture and I have tried to put a heck of a lot more detail into these.

This one is called 'Battlefield'

Yes, any segments you lay down over these will remove the terrain segments, especially nice when you want to use trenches or whatever, also means any buildings you create dont have the terrain poking through the floor, you could also place caves etc or tunnel/basement entrances wherever you like.

Thanks for comments.
The battlefield scene really has to be seen in game to appreciate it, when you pan around you actually feel as though you are in a real scene, in all honesty a screenshot just doesn't do it justice.
I have no idea of a release date for these right now as it looks like I will have to keep this level of quality up throughout.I can promise these environments will be the best I can make them.

They look nice, but the problem being here is that because EVERYONE will use them, they'll simply look bland and default after two/three games.. Since there's little ways to customize them, unless you're planning on adding seperate segments to customize it with add-on hills and stuff.

Or make several bits and pieces you can put together to create different kinds of terrains, rather then being forced to put it all together in one specific method.

As these use a single texture it will be very easy to change the appearance and change the skybox if you wish, as these are segments you can remove any you wish, by placing trenches, buildings, trees etc and also as these are merely environments I would expect to see a big change in appearance when folks add their own segments and entity's into the scene.
I dont expect people to use these as they are I can safely assume they would make them their own, with a variety of terrains and skyboxes of this quality its up to you or do you just want to stick with the stock media provided with FPSC outof the box, imagination is the key and I suppose you could say what you said about any of the models packs and media already available.

Quote: "Or make several bits and pieces you can put together to create different kinds of terrains, rather then being forced to put it all together in one specific method."

To be honest I doubt anyone around here would want to lay down 1600 segments in the order they have to be laid out these will be prefabs and already created map files, you need to try to appreciate the work involved in creating these and I can assure you nobody else has ever attempted it, as for making these modular that is an idea I may consider but to make modular arrangements match with others would be a logistical nightmare and whose to say what particular hills or flat terrain would suit everybody's needs, if this were easy then everybody would be doing it, if ever FPSC gets a terrain generator you would still find the skyboxes and textures useful.

That's true I guess, but a large terrain would seem more noticable, then for example a few stacked crates(Unless the Terrain is so heavily populated you can barely see any of it offcourse).

Quote: "To be honest I doubt anyone around here would want to lay down 1600 segments in the order they have to be laid out"

That's just pure madness yes

Quote: " you need to try to appreciate the work involved in creating these and I can assure you nobody else has ever attempted it"

I never said I did not appreciate the amount of work such a project would cost, merely stating that it'll end up being used a gazillion times in various games, which in the long run will just make people get tired of them.

Quote: "as for making these modular that is an idea I may consider but to make modular arrangements match with others would be a logistical nightmare and whose to say what particular hills or flat terrain would suit everybody's needs"

Also very much true, even simply getting a few roof objects to match can be a pain. I hadn't really thought of that back there.

I was in no way trying to put your work down, or the effort you're putting into it. I was just stating that when it's out, a year later people will just go like "Oh, you're using that and that terrain, can't you make your own?" since it's been overused a million times. And to be very honest I don't get why we still don't have a decent way to create terrains in FPSC, there's a load of people asking for it and so far it's been completely ignored.

I'll just hush now and let you get back to what you were doing though

I didn't really think you were putting anything down you do have some valid points, but as I say this is something FPSC badly needs and I entirely agree that terrain generation is one of those, the thing is a year from now I would actually hope that these would be very outdated as you say and by then I would hope to have something else to add that was valid we all know that FPSC media gets old real quick to all us regular users but I hope these at least improve what we have for now. There are three things here of value, the skyboxes for fpsc are now way overused, there is no real working terrain since the introduction of null space so all surfaces for enemy collision have to conform to 100x100 units, and creating a terrain which doesn't use the usual tiling method which looks really bad over a large area and isn't completely flat all adds to something everyone has always wanted, also these terrain match seamlesly with the skybox, another thing not seen before.
I know its not perfect but then what is in FPSC?
I think when you find you can retexture these to suit your own environments you will realise how versatile they really are, as far as I am concerned use your own skyboxes too, and to be honest I think the skyboxes or the terrains alone will be worth it to most folks.

As requested a short video of the Battlefield environment, still looks better in game, ignore the bands on the skybox these are caused by video compression the sky is of course much smoother than appears in this.
Theres still a lttle touching up to be done on the terrain texture.

I have been considering shaders for these, would be nice to get detail or normal mapping, suppose even a mix of shaders so certain areas could use different ones. I do know that Lee is implementing more ability for v1.17 to use shaders will keep track of what goes down.

Nice work rolfy. These look very clean and the detail is amazing. Was showing my wife these, and she also liked these very much. Just had a couple questions...

Are you planning to sell as a pack or individual?

Do you have a rough time frame when these are ready so we can start planning our developments on the drawing board? If it is going to be down the road, we can hold off on a few developments we have going.

These will most likely not be sold by myself individually, once Lee gets a chance to test them they will either be store or model pack, not decided yet, he has been suggesting ideas to me for these terrains that will certainly take them to another level if implemented but I dont want say what till its set in concrete and am not even sure it will actually work but hope to get something happening that will give these the 'WOW' factor as Lee puts it, just need to wait and see. As for a release date, not sure, its a lot of work both setting up and making FPSC ready, each terrain will be 1600 segments.
