Hi, I\'m new to FPSC and have a question before I start mapping.

I have an idea for a map that requires a large body of water, like an ocean. The water itself can be off-limits to the player, but I was wondering if there was a way to convey this convincingly?

You can use hurt zones to kill the player if they go in the water.

well read

as for an ocean effect, the best you will achieve in FPSC is a water decal, possibly a shader effect. I'm not sure where you can get a water decal other than the TGC sprite-pack (Pay)

A mod will provide you with water, or FPSC X10. If you're not going to use either of these, you could wait till v1.17 is released which should contain water. Otherwise, download a water decal and set the size to something like 10,000 so you only need to place one.

Is there any mod specifically that has water effects? I know efx does, but I've heard that really makes the game laggy. Is that true?

I know FPSC isn't really designed to handle large outdoor areas, so would a beach scene be unplayable due to lag?

How long do you think it'll be 'til 1.17 comes along?

All of the above depends on the computer of whoever's running it. A decent computer won't be lagged too much by efxMod. Yet a large beach scene, how large are you talking? Like, whole map? Then no one will be able to run it.

At the 117 question; we're all not sure. But it'll be soon...

Water skybox and decals are illusions that would maybe pass 11 years ago. I'd just go with EFX Mod or any other mods with water.

Jeku always gets drunk and tries to Moderate the ocean. Tirelessly slapping the waves as they roll in.

Wont do that if i where u, u could get nasty problems with that, as for example enemys wont walk and such, anyway, rolfy released a couple of decals. Use them, they are fine.

Hmmm, yes indeed and 1 month ago, and now. Played COD5?
Well, they use real water wich blends with their skybox (contains water).

Well, obviously you don't place the enemies on the water...

Even so, it is the real water which creates the illusion and not the skybox.

Tho, then it is no illusion, as it is real time rendered.

I tried.
Even then, its collision will affect the movement of the entitys.
And ur texture will be very bad as u stretch it heavily, u could do a 4096 tex on it wouldnt be very laggy if it is on static object, but has it is on a dynamic decal, this will lag.

Anyway, Keep it up!

There's a difference between relying on a skybox entirely for water and using a skybox to extend the illusion that the realistic water never ends.

That's the point I was trying to make.

Alright, fine! So what if it has it's problems? He asked for a solution to his problem so I suggested one - obviously there are problems with each one. FPSC X10 obviously isn't want he wants, so there's no hope there. He could use EFX Mod or some other mod, but the downside is this will lag on most computers. The original poster has only joined recently, so I assumed it would be best for him to be using stock FPSC. That leaves him with the only option of using decals/overlays - he wanted an ocean, so placing down hundreds of overlays is clearly not practical. So scaling a normal overlay is really the only option for someone in his position, which is the reason why I first suggested it. Of course, if he has the hardware, he could use a mod but let's not forget the slowdowns this would cause. RedEye, is this personal or something? Because recently you seem to have been nitpicking at everything I've suggested, even if I'm only trying to help.

That's a 3d skybox. A feature FPS Creator does not have - the closer mountains, river, buildings etc in the background are all rendered in the engine itself as oppose to being baked in to an image.

In Black Mesa itself, that river is a 3d model. It's texture is animated, and when you move it's perspective is changed (unlike the 2d skybox, which will always be in the same fixed position on your screen)

Creates a realistic effect in-game (Although you can't see it as well in that video as in the full HD trailer.)

Jeku always gets drunk and tries to Moderate the ocean. Tirelessly slapping the waves as they roll in.

Actually if your skybox has a large body of water the foam and wave shader models I released can create a very nice illusion of real water, when the foam shader model is place horizontal to the sea it adds to the texture creating the illusion that it is part of it all.
Anything further out would be unnoticable anyway.

Hey Rolfy,

I downloaded the wave and foam files, and placed them in the entitybank folder. When I put them in the game, though, they don't animate, they are just still.

I'm sure there's something simple I'm not doing, can you guide me in the right direction?

It was possibility that I was pointing out.
