I dont normally jump into these threads but this one deserves some comment.
Normally I would tell folks that Max is a complete waste of money if all you use it for is modeling it is so much more than that in fact you are paying for an entire modeling rigging and animation and post production package and with available plug ins (which will add thousands more to the price of your current software) it was primarily for movie production and high end games production. The inflated price of Max is down to the rendering engine which is of no use if simply modeling, its an industry standard software mostly affordable by companies and thinking that the most expensive means your modeling will improve is downright retarded. I learned Max way back at v.2 and mostly improvements are based on user created plug ins (namely free) I had to learn it as many of the companies I worked for thought it would enhance their abilty to pull in more clients and made them appear to be 'cutting edge', to be honest it was rarely used, this is for two reasons, most clients didnt know what they wanted from it and most graphic design companies lacked the staff with imagination enough to think of uses for it either. The gui is a lot more complex than first appears and you wont find many that tknow every aspect and procedure for its use. Its a software for many users who would each learn a certain discipline to use it, in the same way that games designers come in many different disciplines, thing is you only pay 50 bucks for this sofware and can learn a lot about other aspects of game design in the process, you pay 3500 bucks for Max only to find you need years to learn all the disciplines involved in its use.
I have been in colleges where the tutors (cad) would proudly show their skill in creating a firework (particles) and the first question they would ask me, incredulously, "you actually know how to use it?" I tell you this because it makes my point about companies and education establishments buying this product, they think it will (like a lot of folks it seems) enable them to do ANYTHING they can imagine. It takes a lot of learning the first of which would be to read the manual that COMES with your product and at the same time joining the autodesk forums where you will find you can post the very questions you are asking here on a forum which has absolutely nothing to do with 3sMax.
Or you could just throw up your hands and say:

Powned.
