You cannot. Unless you somehow are able to get direct permission from Id(not likely).

You could try to get permission. But they will probably say no, if they answer

I would suggest you instead go looking for some music that can be licensed for reasonable fees: http://shockwave-sound.com/

Of course you can use it, so long as you do not profit from it what-so-ever (including the selling of your game, it would have to be a free game). I don't see why everyone on this forum is so tight about copyright, you don't see this type of thing on Newgrounds on the millions of Mario remakes, for example.

@ Marc Steene

People misconstrude copyright laws a lot. Most of the goverments (mostly US) people are brought up to belive if you listen to one song at radio shack you are in violation of copy right laws. So it becomes almost a fear. You are right though, as long as you give full credits to the maker, in credits and make it very visible and the game is not commercial, you get not money from it what so ever, you should be good. You are not in violation of copyright laws.

Even if a project is non-commercial you are still breaking copyright laws.

You may not get sued since your product is too small to get noticed (most FPSC games have a hard time getting more than a few hundred downloads) but don't lie to yourself and say you aren't breaking laws.

If it's a cover, they're fine. As long as they didn't use ANY sounds from the original.

Completely wrong. Notes and song texts are copyrighted just as well. A cover song still has to pay license fees and credit the original creators.

Once again, many artists are too small to actually get noticed when breaking copyright but that does not make it legal.

Of course everything in the Doom games are copyrighted. That isn't up for debate here.

I wasn't trying to start a debate, rather help this person with their game.

To make short about copyright laws, (1) if something is copyrighted (a song, writing, etc), you cannot use it without the original author's permission; UNLESS you can find a license for the original piece that says otherwise.

In this case (using a remix of a copyrighted piece), you still need permission from the author of the original work. For example, you CANNOT use a cutscene in your game made by 'Joe Smith' on Youtube, which was nothing more than a compilation of mildly edited scenes taken from The Dark Knight, because the content in those scenes from Joe's video are copyrighted.

If you've ever seen user videos on Youtube, which don't have any audio in them, with a statement; "The audio for this video has been removed due to a copyright claim by ...", it's the same thing. The original author took action against his work being used without his permission, and the audio was removed.

(2) If you're unsure about a license, or if you can or can't use this or that; the safest thing to do is simply not use it.
