I started another airplane, this time a WW1 Fokker Dr1, the plane the "Red Baron" flew. I'm pretty happy with it so far. The goal is to come in under 1500 tris, and, I think I am going to hit it. I also am making it so the aielerons, rudder, and elevater will be functional, probably thru animation but might just do it thru code by making those parts limbs. I've never done working parts on a plane, so, anyone who has any suggestions, I'm all ears. I only have the engine cowl and prop to do, I'll work on those tonight, shouldn't take too long, then off for mapping.
I'm thinking I really enjoy making airplanes, and I'll post it up when its done. Next one will be the Sopwith Camel,(or maybe that was Snoopy?) the plane that shot down the Red Baron.

Looks nice, is that to proportion or did you make it look cartoony (never seen the Red Baron's plane before )

its rotoscoped in Animation Master from a 3view drawing I got off TheBlueprints.com, so, its fairly faithful dimension wise to the real thing. Not going for engineering perfect, just having fun. I've taken a few liberties, in the interest of saving polygons.

edit:
here's a link to one I found in a quick search, I guess a Flight Sim version:

http://www.avsim.com/pages/1102/simtech/fokker_belly.jpg

edit again:
after looking at that pic, it dawned on me a better way to do the rudder, with less polys. Do it like a spoked wheel....so, I'll fix that.
edit again:
as thin as a rudder is, I suppose I could just make a 2 sided plane and use a texture with transparency also. that is how I plan to get the "webbing" on the trailing edges of the wings done.

Update. Changed a few things. Added the cowl and prop. Not happy with the prop. will redo it. got a few normal issues to work out. Texture map coming soon. I will upload this model for all. In fact, I plan on a series of WW1 fighters.

I added this model to the model database. UV mapping is done, ready for painting. I bone rigged the model so now it has rotatable ailerons, elevator, rudder, and propeller. I tested in DBPro with a JR388s radio controller connected thru FSOne Flight Sim interface cable. Works flawless.

Hehe cool, does the transmitter work as a joypad? or are you using a dll?

Its looking good, rare to see something that isn't a Messerschmitt or Spitfire being made . I noticed 4 polygons you could (maybe) shave off your model at the tips of the elevators....nothing major.

Looks good. Now it needs a texture.

@NickH
yes, the transmitter works like a joypad. If you know about r/c airplanes, when I move the right stick, it controls the ailerons and elevator. The left stick controls the throttle and the rudder. It looks just like if you had your airplane on the ground and were working the controls. It did not require any special dll.

@Josh
I know....the part I really suck at.

@Josh
I posted the project code with the fokker model rigged and working here:

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=169299&b=1

there are two functions set up, one for the FSOne, one for the xBox 360 controller.
If you use FSOne, you may have to remap your sticks, depending on your transmitter. I don't have the Tacon so, I can't say how to do it. I have 8ch JR, and also 4 and 6 channel Futabas. I suppose I could make a mapping for the Futabas, as well.

If you have any trouble or questions, just let me know.

I've had some experience in the past, but none of my transmitters are good enough to be linked to a computer. Other than making games and 3D graphics, aircraft is one my other interests
