Is it a good idea to keep a file open to write a log file during a game?
That would mean that it would be open most the time?

It would not hurt anything. It may be the most efficient thing to do, in that case it would be a good idea.

As long as what your writing is small and done quickly, it shouln't be too much of a problem.
