I'm working on an improved normal mapping algorithm for FPSC, it's very fast and high quality even at grazing angles, and has the added ability to do parallax offset. It renders even faster than the Shader Model 2.0 normal mapping algorithm. But, it uses HLSL commands only available on Shader Model 3.0 hardware.

So, I'm asking for a volunteer that has an ATI card to test this shader for ATI compatibility. The requirements: You must have DarkShader, and you must have an ATI Radeon HD-series graphics card. Not an integrated chipset, an actual graphics card.

Contact me via email if you meet the requirements, and I'll send you the files to load into DarkShader. The first three people to contact me that meet the requirements will get their choice of one of my model packs for free as a thank you after testing.

Email me with your ATI card model, and remember you must also have DarkShader.

Sorry, Nvidia cards are compatible with everything.

It's the ATI users I'm not sure about, and it's about time I get a clear answer - and offering free stuff is best way to get that answer.

Sent an e-mail, glad I bought my EAH5770 when I did.

EDIT : Which is an actual ATI card, just not a Radeon named one.. It came with ATI Catalyst drivers.. So yeah, it's like how Nvidia releases stuff under ASUS rather then NVIDIA at times.

I'm interested to know the results of this test. My 9800 GT is managing fine, but I will need an upgrade eventually and NVIDIA is just falling behind in the DirectX 11 market. (With only 2 pricey cards which don't perform well as ATI's DX11 range)

I would however, be happy to test on this laptops integrated Intel graphics card

This is probably the only time since switching to Nvidia I regret not having my HD 2900XT around.

@bond1 - Have you come to any decision about how this god like shader is going to be rolled out?

The final piece of the FPSC graphics jigsaw has finally been found. All we need now is for bond1 to put it in place.

I've gotten all the testers I need for now, and have gotten responses from ONE of them so far. If any of the testers don't come through or I need more testers, I'll contact you in order.

Great news! Lewis successfully tested the shader on an ATI HD4800 series card! So it looks like Shader Model 3 is now working on newer ATI cards, and I know how to properly write the shaders to work on both Nvidia and ATI.

So going forward, I can do SM3 shaders without worrying about compatiblity. This normal mapping shader is GREAT. It works equally well on flat and curved surfaces, and you can use mirrored UV's without worrying about inverted lighting. And it will work on segments and static models along with lightmapping.

I still want to hear back from the two others, just to make sure Lewis's card was not a lone exception in the ATI range.

Well it says that the newer cards have Shader Model 5, so I didn't doubt their compatability.

Maybe ATI isn't so bad after all.

Yeah it sounds like it's been straightened out, either in their newest HD series, or a driver update. I know the previous generation Radeons were not back-compatible with SM3 even though they were listed as SM4 compatible.

Anyhow, at least I can now put actual minimum system requirements on future model packs. Nvidia 6-series or above, or ATI HD-series or above.

Now ATI just needs better PhysX support

And for good measure, also confirmed working on ATI HD4770. Radeons tested on both Windows XP and Windows 7. Case closed as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for all the help everyone.
