I'll start by saying hi... so hi everyone. Names Chad. I am not that new to game making but I am new to 3d game making. I just have a few questions about FPSC before I go ahead and buy it. I know its not a huge investment, and I really haven't searched around this site for many/any answers. Ok;

1)I watched a few of the tutorials and seen how easy putting models into the game editor is. Now how about your own models. For right now I am just talking levels. What type of model file can be imported and also is the collision effected at all?

2)When you make a finished game (thinking future here) and you make an .exe is it something that has to install or just run? I ask because I am a gamemaker vet looking for better 3d. Game maker exe files just play, no need to install, and that seems unprofessional.

3)Scripting... Now does FPSC have its own scripting system, program, or is it something like C++?

4)The community here, just how willing to help out a noob are you? Now I'm not talking about making a game for me or sending examples. I love figuring stuff out myself, but when starting a new game creator a kick in the right direction is always nice.

5)Starting included content. I seen somewere that just buying fpsc you get some 800 models to start with, which is cool. Is it everything you need to get started and understand how everything works?

thanks for replys in advance

Welcome to the forums!

1. FPSC uses x files
2. When you create the exe you can click it to run it.
3. FPSC uses fpi scripting there are tutorials around the forum and on sites, http://download.fpsfree.com/n79q24t66ks8/scripts/fpi_script.htm
4. I think the golden rule here is to search for your answer first, and you should be fine.
5. The stock media in FPSC is nice, and theres lots, but download some of the media here on the forums for a personal look, theres no shortage, or maybe make your own.

I also suggest you look http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=131868&b=21, its has lots of great info

-Vent, I hope you enjoy your stay here

Welcome.

You can find entities, scripts, etc for your development from the following:

FPS Free

FPS-Files

FPS-Media

When you build a game, you can run it from the folder it is built in. For example, when you build the final game, it's placed in the FPS Creator\MyGames\<yourgamefolder>. You can archive the <yourfolder> up and distribute. Some of us create installers to pack everything into a single installer to make distribution simple.

The scripting is very easy. If you read up on the link Vent gave you, and have a Visual Basic/C++ background like myself, you will find it easy to pick up on. If you get stuck, a lot of us are willing to help out if you've made an attempt and it does not work. We can show you the errors and help you out.

Best of luck in your endeavors.

And just for the record there is a free trial version for download so you can get a taste of what it can offer. But just a taste, the full version has loads more and soon to come even more loads more when 1.17 comes out.

I suppose that this is where I'm supposed to put some witty one liner. Well...sorry to disappoint.

I felt the need to answer your questions myself...

1)FPSC uses .X files. For stuff like enemies it's easy to put your models in, but stuff like levels can be harder. You have to cut up each piece into 100x100x100 segments then export each one individually. however, if for some reason you don't expect to use enemies (or dynamic entities for that matter) you can export it all at once. But again, if you do that, collision for enemies will be off.

2)No, you don not install it. Fortunately there are many ways to pack it in an installer on the wonderful internet.

3)Yes, the scripting language FPI. It's okay at first, but if you get a mod, (which are okay, most noobs think they are bad, just know that TGC encourages modding to the point that they released the source code) and the library of FPI commands will expand. Trust me, FPI is the easiest thing you will probably learn.

4)Depends. If you use bad grammar and not be specific, you may not be taken well. We have too much of that now. If you use good grammar and explain your problem well to us, we are more than happy to help.

5)Yes, it's everything you need to get started. But trust me, in the future you want to get some custom media. There's tons for free on the forums, and a plethora of stuff to buy.

Anyway, good to see you here! Hope you enjoy it over at the TGC forums.

thanks everyone for your posts. I just got my order accepted and everything came up for download. I installed FPSC, and its asking for a serial key. Im going to hunt around to see if i can find it on the site instead of waiting for my copy in the mail. Also downloading the model packs included with my purchase.

@Shadowtroid:
I understand what you mean about grammer and being specific. Also I'm glad FPI is easy to learn, I am a Game Maker vet, and the gml wasn't the hardest to learn, but its all I know. Also mods are fine, and yes almost all noobs find mods bad, but usually because they don't understand them.

Well I'm off to mess around with this. I probly won't be around for a few days just so I can get the feel of what FPSC is all about. Thanks again everyone and ttyl

Hi Chad301

I'll keep this relatively brief and just give you some general info.

FPSC is an incredibly powerful game engine which can be used for commercial quality projects.

The latest version (V116) can be combined with mods such as Fenix (free) and Project Blue (subscription) to make very impressive games. However we are soon to receive the new version (V117) which is going to bring FPSC into the next generation of first person shooter gaming.

This community is largely very friendly and helpful. Just try to ignore the occasional non helpful post as there will almost certainly be someone else come along and help with your problem. It is important to demonstrate you've actually tried to fix the problem yourself first though.

The amount of free media which can be found around the forums is frankly incredible and you will find a button to access the TGC store in FPSC which offers a whole bunch of media to you.

I've tried a few engines in my time but FPSC delivers way more than a lot of more expensive products and gets better all the time.

One thing I would say is avoid FPSC X10 and get FPSC X9 as it is much better.
