I would like to try to make an RPG, but I do not know the best way to go about this.

I believe I am right to say that people don't just use DBPro to handle the data. I think I have heard of people using database programs or something. Please offer any assistance.

There's a website http://www.mojomagic.co.uk this place will tell you the basic codes that you need for this type of game.
Although i thought it is hard to make, it proberly is hard to make but i think maybe later on in life i might plan of making a game like this.
On the homepage click on download

I can code in DBPro alright, but I am interested to know if people use other means to handle the masses of data RPGs normally contain (though I would only make a very simple one by comparison).

Yes. DBP can handle an RPG. MMORPGs are questionable, they are data intensive. RPGs use far less data than an MMORPG.

The computer I use for DBP isn't connected to the internet or any LAN so I don't think a MMORPG is something I'll try anytime soon.

I think my main obstacles are:

(a) LAZINESS (I'm not afraid to admit it. I am a lazy fool.)
(b) Giving up when there is a problem.

hhmmmm, you shouldn't really need another program or language to handle all the information. i'm not an expert so correct me if im wrong but arrays stored in memory blocks should work fine. might seem complicated but rpgs are complicated games.

oh and if you are a lazy fool that often gives up rpgs (or even programming) might be a lot more frustrating that originally planned.

patience and time

if your not commited then an RPG is well out of your reach, online or offline doesn't matter which.

my advice would be find your favourite RPG, Zelda - Final Fantasy - Grandia - etc... then base yours on a proven working system.
Try to get most of the elements working similar, then you can work out the specifics as you go.

most important thing is you need a STORY, you can expand it later but you need a background story (aka why everyone is in crazy clothes battling space aliens from jupiter or whatever) and then a game story which the characters will follow

making the bg story helps continutity and scripting the specifics of the main story.

The laziness is something I plan to change though. I'm capable of making a good program, I just need motivation.

I made a "world editor" for school that lets the user pick models and images, then place (textured) objects and matrices around the world and also alter fogging draw distance. If I can handle the data for that, I think I can handle the data for an RPG.

But Raven's advice will be useful. I never plan programs/games before I write it.

Depending on the style of RPG that you plan to make, adopting a pen and paper RPG system might be a big help when you get to designing/coding your combat system, skill systems, character gen routines, etc.

For example, Knights of the Old Republic is based on Star Wars D20. The D20 system is a nice and flexible starting point. I have used D20 Modern in past campaigns for some killer Power Armor tactical combat gaming.

Of course, D20 is pretty deep (as in rules heavy.) There are dozens, if not hundreds, of RPG systems out there to choose from. [Hey, I've been waiting a long time for a quality Macho Women with Guns game.*] Some systems like Plain Label and Fudge are very accessible. Others, like GURPS, I would not touch with a 10 foot pole. [Game lore: Fallout was going to be a flagship GURPs game until there was a fall out (heh) between Steve Jackson and the development team.]
