See, I'm fancy and I can actually figure out the real names for the guns for once.
But yeah, for anyone who doesn't know, I actually got an approval of http://cg.tutsplus.com/ to post tutorials on there, and I figured I wanted to post something on there, so I made this. Since I haven't really made a lot of hard surface tutorials, actually, I don't think I've done any.

This is one o' those fancy pants LUGER pistols with the weird thing on top, figured it looked cool so I decided to make it, also wanted to keep it to something quite simple like this.

I'm missing some high-surface detail on the high poly like the patterns on the handle and what-not but that's added later in photoshop.
These shots aren't rendered or anything, so anti-aliasing is more or less crap, and the model probably as well.
EDIT: They're not rendered with a half-decent light setup which really doesn't look that good but at least it shows things a bit better

This is the high poly version, which I've got most of the progress recorded, I'll compress it down and make it a series, the I'll see if I can get the making of the low poly and the baking process to be a series as well. We'll see how things turn out.

Azunaki this'll be for Maya, but obviously it's not that hard to emulate in other software, all it really is is making a base shape and adding control edges.
Thanks a lot guys! =)

That's a really sharp looking model, Alucard94! And also, congrats on getting approved at tutsplus.com!

Great start, some crits:

The handle looks a bit lumpy, from what i have seen from images, there is not much curving until the edge of the handle, you have a bit of fluctuation going on near the curved section.

The gap between the handle and receiver also looks a tad large.

The circular mechanism piece is a bit large by my eye.

The extruded curve on the receiver looks incorrect, seems a bit too organic.

Mostly just nit picks.

There is actually barely that much curve on the handle, but just the shading making it look like that from the side. It'll look better when I have the pattern on there, trust me.
All of the things you mentioned after that were actually in all of the references that I looked at though, the circular mechanism is just the right size according to reference, the curve is actually that organic and the gap is actually like that as well.
Maybe I'm wrong though, thanks for the crits!
Oh, updated first post with better images

Hm I used that amongst other references while modeling, didn't notice any inaccuracy at the time.
I'll check through it and compare. Thanks.

NURBS FTW! I love using NURBS for technically accurate models. Wish I still had my student copy of Maya, it had very powerful NURBS tools, looks like your using it for the gun model. So, what's next?

Maya does have really good NURBS options, I'm not using them though. This is just made with regular polygons and the smooth mesh preview on, basically it just previews how the model looks after two subdivisions, which is really useful for high-poly work.

I'm going to focus on getting this tutorial narrated and out for the next week or so, since it is a lot of stuff, but then I'll be making a low poly of this, baking it and hopefully texturing. We'll see how long I'll take it.

Ah ok, kul. It looked like NURB structures because of the colors. Honestly, haven't used Maya in 4 years.

Good luck with the tutorial, many bookmarks too you.
