Battles of the Third Age

http://battlesofthethirdage.blogspot.com/

This is a project I started few months ago, I'm making it in DBP

Quoting from the blog:

Quote: "BotTA is an upcoming PC game, where the player will take part in the major and minor battles of the War of the Ring, experiencing them from the eyes of both ordinary soldier’s and heroes. "

View of the first battlefield - the slopes of Mount Doom.

Quote: "
It’s an answer to my disappointment in the LotR games released by big companies, such as the horrible LotR: Conquest.
The concept of the game will be similar, but I’m trying to keep things very realistic. No glowing swords or superpowers but thousands of troops on the battlefields, with an original and pleasant fighting system. Slaying orcs has never been so much fun.
There are going to be featured locations such as the Helms Deep, Mines of Moria, Minas Tirith, Fords of Isen, and Black Gate and more.

What’s more, the game is going to be totally free for download. "

Orc army approaching

I have finished the first part of making the game: basic game engine, battle system, terrain system and basic graphics, and now I'll keep upgrading it and adding more stuff until I reach my goal: great gameplay Custom battles and multiplayer are also planned, plus modding tools, like creating own battles and units.

If you like the idea and the screenshots, please leave a comment on my blog to help it spread!!

Heh, I'm by no means a LoTR geek but it sure does look familiar, this is definitely a cool idea but I don't know how fun it'll be in the long term if you finish it.

looks good for dark basic standards, gray and dull for game industry standards.

you could use something like this for the sky box to bring more colors to the pallet.

make sure you get rid of the attack of the clones theme once you're done .

it's very promising.

Thanks for all the nice comments I'm finishing the shadow system and then I guess it's time to fight some clone wars. The engine needs few upgrades etc and I think within few weeks, after I'll make Numenorean and Elven armies, and Sauron himself, the first level will be fully playable

The first mission is going to be divided into few 'objectives', but I'm still geathering ideas to make the gameplay more interesting and challenging.
