I'm having a bit of a problem with DarkShader.
Every time I start up DarkShader, the Preview windows crashes, giving me this message: "Preview window is not responsing, restart it?". If I tell it to restart it, it just crashes again and gives me the same message.

I'm not sure what caused this since it was working fine a few days ago. DBPro still works prefectly fine, and the rest of DarkShader still works. It's only the Preview window that is crashing.

Please help?

I have similar intermittent problems with Dark Shader on my Vista machine - usually when it's not the active application. It works fine on my XP machine.

It's an annoying problem. What operating system are you using?

I've no idea why it should suddenly start giving problems though.

I've just decided to "update" my copy of Dark Shader and put it in what I thought was a sensible folder, and now mine crashes on exit every time.

I guess we're both doing something wrong - but probably not the same wrong thing.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate. Now that I think about it, I think I might have updated DBPro to 7.4 around the time it stopped working, though I'm not sure.

Reinstalling DarkShader doesn't seem to help either.

Theres an update that fixes these crashes for vista for dark shader(iirc its specifically for the preview window - an .exe was made available to replace the original .exe just for the preview window) but its no longer available from my order history since the website changes/update(I had pressumed that it was no longer available as I expected the new download to include the fix - apparently not the case?). I have upgraded to dbp v7.5 recently with no other changes and dark shader still works fine as far as I can tell. @GG - because you reinstalled you probably need the preview exe replacement - without that I cannot see this working for anyone succesfully using vista or windows 7 - I have a backup of this which I have uploaded - I was a little concerned I shouldn`t upload but I think its ok as on its own it does nothing.
Edit : Had to edit to upload

Thanks. That fixed it.

Strange I've never encountered that particular problem before though - although the Preview window did regularly stop responding at fairly random times. It'll be interesting to see if that problem is solved too. I'd never bothered to download that particular file before as it wasn't obvious what it was fixing. My original installation on this machine was from the Dark Studio CD - but the new installation was from the latest download available in my order history. Perhaps the versions differ in some subtle way?

Once again, thanks.

Unfortunately for me, it seems that file is unrelated to my problem.
I've tried running DarkSahder in compatibility mode, but that doesn't change a thing. The window crashes as soon as DarkShader opens up, and keeps crashing everytime I try to restart it.

I did a complete uninstal of DarkShader, and reinstalled it again, but still no luck.

Do the DBPro updates even affect DarkShader? I'm totally clueless as to why it suddenly started doing this. It worked fine up until a week or two ago.

I am sad.

Rei: Its entirely possible that a further update may be needed that has not yet been provided for windows 7. AFAIK there aren`t any TGC products that specifically support windows 7 - some don`t even support vista - but I could be wrong. The only things I can suggest you try; ensure you have latest directx9; make sure you have installed the dbp runtime(can`t remember if this affects DBP itself or DS but can`t hurt to make sure its installed); make sure administrator priveledges are active for DS. If this has already been done then you may wish to consider emailing TGC support.

Highly unlikely since U7.4/5(I think) the dark shader commands only are included(ie not DS itself) - as a dll, which is not part of the DS installation and iirc it replaces any old DS dll that might be installed.

Yeah that seems odd. Perhaps you have made significant change to system like a new gfx card and driver or installed a driver for your current card(ie your drivers are proving to be incompatable with DS), or maybe you turned UAC on so DS may now need administrator rights.

GG: Its the least anyone here could do for the guy that has given so much to the users here.
