Well that type of model is good for normal map baking I'm still having troubles with that, which is why I've been somewhat inactive with my own work recently. But, back to this thread, Its good. Try visualizing where to keep solid and where to smooth. Take this for example, a cylinder. The lateral area of the cylinder would be smoothed, but the flat top and bottom would be kept solid. Not sure, but the term for that is smoothing groups (or at least it is in max, so I know).

@Asteric YES! I mean, I know how to bake normal maps, and how to apply them and such, but I'm having so much trouble with manually reducing the polys of the high poly... especially at high poly circular bases, because otherwise I can easily remove edge loops.
