Hi all.

I’m a new user in this forum * *.
I hope for some help so I can decide if Dark Basic prof. is something for me to use.
I need a possibility to make “very big maps with good details and I hope I can use my usual tools, 3Ds Max 5, GTK-Radiant, Hammer, Wally, C++ and so..
Se more details on my homepage: http://realhunterdk.tripod.com/ ..

I’m normally make my games (try..) with Torque (Garage Game and Tribes 2 / has a license).
The Torque system gives me wonderful pics, effect and possibility and I’m very happy for it,, BUT,, Torque has one big problems.. Theirs documentations can stand on a “very little place (maybe a Danish expression * *).
I have spend ours and days looking in GGs forums (for me a mess) for similar programming problems as mine, but no.. I’m nearly given up…
Hope anybody here can give me “a lift and tell me, “ohh is a simple case in Dark Basic **..

Best regards Lisa RealHunterDK Denmark.

You'll need to ask plenty of questions, as with all development, but there's a lot of friendly, helpful people around here

Well, DBPro's terrains need a lot of updating, they've been left by the wayside in favour of necessary bug fixes. You can use .BSP maps, although it does take some messing about though.

For my terrains I like to use a simple heightmap array, then create the terrain in blocks of 8x8 with memblocks. Memblocks are like internal files, so a memblock could be an image, or a sound, or in this case a 3D model. Memblocks let you control things much more than most languages, so if you wanted you could develop your own terrain and BSP style systems for your own engine.

It is really easy to understand DB Pro, and with your past experience you'll probably pick it up quickly. I think the speed difference might put you off slightly, but DBPro is fast enough for me, and the speed of development slaughters C++.

Why not grab the trial version and see what you can do with it?.

Hi all again..

I’m worked nearly “non stop with my evaluation and test of Dark Basic Pro (the trial-version).
In the trial version, I not have access to the tutorials and Examples..

I (just) try to show one of my Max figure in DB.

I have on the very careful way, try to “re engineering the Pelican demo to show my figure, exported to a .X file via Panda/Max exporter (without any kind of animation and texture),,,
“Runtime Error 7018 Could not load 3D object… I use the DB order “load object.
I try with the same figure, this time exported as a .3DS object,, Now I have a totally black screen ??

I must do something very wrong therefore, is here a sweet person * *, there will write me a little bit of code so I can see my figure (just see) in Dark Basic, maybe with texture *SS*.

I don’t hope I ask for to much..

Best regards,, the absolute beginner in Dark Basic,
Lisa RealHunterDK..

Here is some code to load and display a simple object:

Beware: the code isn't tested, I just wrote it up now to try to help you out, but I am very experienced in Dark Basic. Make sure to replace "Object File" with the location of your 3D object file you want to load.

(Click on the code box below)

Ohh, try converting from that .3DS file to .X format, DBPro's .3DS loading code has just been re-added, .X is the most stable, the only format to use in fact.

Hi again…

IEEE,, its work, I can see my figure now, okay a little dark but okay * *. My major mistake was I convert as “Ascii (text) in the Panda exporter, because the “Pelican was in Ascii text (I look in the file with notepad), so after I use the binary option, all is okay.
For now I don’t understand, why the “Pelican is okay with Ascii- conversion but not my figure, okay lets its fly for now * *..
Thanks to Xander-Bolt for your help, I ‘m is coming a big step further * *.
My next “problem for my evaluation is, to make a big flat landscape and place just one single BSP object (my one BSP object with textures) on it and see how its look.
I have make some experiments with the .DBA file in the tutorials “Huge Dungeons and I’m not finis yet, but this file is the nearly point I can come my wishes, so if anybody * *..

Thanks,, best regards Lisa RealHunterDK from Denmark.
