I'm trying to get multiplayer working on a LAN, so please don't post the port forwarding solution.
I have tried typing in the local IP of the host as well as typing the ID of the game, I just end up getting a "waiting to join" message on the client.

The IP address listed in the game on both PCs is fe80, obviously this is incorrect (its a prefix for link local address i think), i used the actual local IP address (from command line) when trying to connect.

I have searched the forums and the web, there is nothing other than the port forwarding solution or typing in the IP address directly, since neither of these worked I was hoping someone else might have had a similar problem.

Many thanks.

Make sure that any firewalls on the local machines aren't running as they could be blocking the connection attempts.

Yep,even through LAN it won't work cause you have to open ports for hosting AND joining.
