just a quickie question really... but does ANYONE know what they current logo looks like.

I mean DarkBASIC Professional has that horrible golden pyramid, DarkBASIC has the cool yellow pyramid and when they were called DarkBASIC Software, they also had that cool lil pyramid as thier logo.

But now they've changed thier name, then what on earth does the new logo look like? Do you guys even have one?
The old logo was cool, however the new one should have a 2-Tone version ... not sure why but to me the 2-Tone logo is a great symbol of a professional company.

Yeah, something understated, there's something about rendered or detailed logo's that sorta defeats the purpose, like they're trying too hard. The best logo's are those that you recognise instantly, even from a crude sketch on a fag packet, you would recognise the logo.

I think, despite the retro chiq they seem to carry around, that Atari have a great logo - it's like the Adidas or Nike logo of the computer age. Damn I miss that shiny metal badge on my ST .

In case you've just been born, this is the Atari logo:

I thought they were still keeping the pyramid - I quite like it.

We went through various logo designs (some including little symbols, pictures, etc) and ditched them all. It's just not needed. We're not a brand you'll ever recognise by a symbol alone. Atari got away with it because they pioneered and their logo was in the faces of millions. Today it wouldn't mean half as much if someone at Infogrames had cranked it out.

Cheers,

Rich

I would disagree, I think a corporate identity is very important. Even reselling to your existing customer base is easier if the product sells itself. A happy customer recognising your identity on another product will be immediately drawn to it, regardless of what it actually is.

Why not have a mini-comp - design an identity for TGC. Must be worth a DB Pro giveaway, companies pay tens of thousands to have a brand designed.

Nah, we have a monotone version of our logo that works well in print. If it's good enough for discreet, microsoft, macromedia, maxon, etc then it's good enough for me! (none of them have little "symbol graphics" either, just plain text font).

Cheers,

Rich

Sorry, I thought this conversation had gone in the direction of having no logo whatsoever. I didn't realise you are still using the existing one.

My missus's site has a very simple logo, but it's become memorable to our regular customers, so we've kept with it. I've wanted to "play" with it, but like you say, it's good enough for the big boys so it's good enough for me!

oki, fair enough ... personally think a logo is really a strong symbol that shows alot about a company.

Most developers/publishers have them, even if it is just wordplay like SCi has or such - it's still something that is recognisable.
oftenly the logo's text is something standard, yet has something different about it to make it unique and not exactly simply a case of setting fonts to reproduce it.

Microsoft and Discreet for example sliced a triangle out of one of the letters, Macromedia has a pretty recognisable symbol as well as a the name, Maxon used to have that 3bar retro play on it (but to be honest not seen much of them recently)
nvidia have that play on the n and Maxtor changed the X.

at the end of the day its all about marking out and identity which is unique to you guys
i personally liked that funny semi-circle thing in the DB Pyramid.

There are far more important things for us to do right now. As we won't be seeing a new boxed product until late 2004 it's not a current need to address.

Cheers,

Rich

Personally I think that logos can be important, it just depends on how you use them in your marketing...

I think that TGC could certainly use a logo. You could just have a competition where people could come up with idea - you never know. You probably wouldn't even need to offer a prize, just that of the winner's logo appearing on the sites.

Well, I prefered our old email addresses! Get fed-up typing thegamecreators.com every day But the name is far more indicative of where we are heading.

You don't see Adobe originally called Photoshop Limited or Microsoft called DOS Limited It's not a good plan to name yourself after a single product unless that is all you ever want to do. We have slightly bigger aspirations than that.

Cheers,

Rich

yeah but still... the game creators
aspirations higher, why not something that sounded higher like Stratus or even eGAME - i dunno, TGC just sounds like one of those names you guys decided to fill on the form cause you were in a rush.

what is kinda ironic is the fact that it sounds like you guys are "game creators" when your service is to provide the tools TO game creators.

still think something enigmatic would've been cooler, like
the consortium or something hehee.
no no, i've got the perfect name -
Consortium of Development Software (CODS) hahaa

Consortium? It sounds like a Borg mothership.

they have what now in the borg? ... didn't know they named thier ships, or had even bigger ones

but that said you guys do seems to be trying to assimilate as many things as possible, i mean just look at the products section - this time last year you guys only have DB & DM on your books ... you've stepped up one heck of a gear.

That avatar actually reminds me of 3 things.

First, it looks like a terminator.
Second, it looks like a pic out of the game ruthless.com
Third, it looks like the cover of a Command & Conquer game.

Doesnt remind me of the borg at all though, maybe its just me.

I would be unstoppable if I could just get started...

It's none of those - it's the front cover to the William Gibson book Neuromancer. Which is also where the first line of my sig comes from - it's the opening line of the book. If you've read the book my "Location" becomes somewhat obvious too.

Highly recommended reading.

Rich
