Quote: "PHL - "The game is powered by Valve's new internally developed 'Source' engine, and is currently scheduled for release September 30th.""

Quote: "PHL
- A Half-Life 2 SDK (Software Development Kit) for mod developers will be released prior to the game hitting store shelves.
- Like the original Half-Life, Valve currently has no plans for a pre-release demo (Half-Life: Day One wasn't an official demo).
- While the new engine has all sorts of fancy features, it's still designed to scale and work on lower-end machines. Apparently a 700mhz processor and a video card capable of running DX6 is enough, although a 2ghz with a GeForce4 is recommended.
"

i've also seen on gamespy that a benchmark demo is due prior release so you know if you can run it or not. Quoted from Gabe.
no thoughts, no big old discussion, just what is available information wise now we're supposidely in the final countdown.

however I would like to know one thing, what is the "Half-Life : Day One" demo? i've not seen it or heard of it.
another thing which no doubt people can answer for me is, HL 1.1.2.0 was released a lil while ago and the latest patch i have is 1.1.1.0 ... but this new patch is 220mb - and includes something called Steam.

Now i understand that Steam is the Won upgrade (i never did play HL much online), however what i'm unsure about is what exactly does this 220mb package add to HL?

The Half-Life "One Day" was a demo version that came out a long time after HL was released, it was basically a specially built demo level.

A friend of mine who is an HL addict hates Steam, apparently it has a lot of issues to work out, and the seemingly pointless 200MB download is one of them. Steam is basically Valve's online multiplayer network (a replacement for WON), it is also a content delivery system so you can buy HL2 over it for example.

so steam doesn't actually add anything new?
if it doesn't actually add any new media like updated models or shaders to HL sod downloading it.

hmm the one day think sounds familiar, the only special demo of Half-Life i know of is Half-Life : Uplink - and that was out either just before or around the same time as HL because i remember playing it and desperatly knowing that I wanted HL itself after that.
Quake2 was cool but next to HL seemed lacking, but it was probably the fact that unlike Unreal or Quake2 it wasn't just pure action-fest.

Steam is a delivery mechanism and through it you can get all the various HL mods, skins, models, textures, etc as well as HL2 videos and other Valve exclusives. I imagine it will be the primary way for HL2 mods to be released as well, so yeah, it's kinda vital if you're into that side of things (if on the other hand you just install HL and play it, it's not so great).

Cheers,

Rich

And it gives me (possibly) extra time to play Halo...

Wonder why its delayed - probably bug testing.

Might just be me but something doesn't seem right about the email, and the response is about as sketchy as a mime artist describing a robbery.

he is doing one of 2 things really,
confirming the thoughs that the title is delayed
confirming the rumour about its delay are untrue

and the fact he doesn't want to actually confirm either might be that they've staged an email to be released saying it'll be delayed got everyone all hyped about a delay and then actually go and release it on time.

must admit it would be very good PR if thats what they've done, and his answer gives them the leaway to do that.
... there's no work getting done here cause everyones now arguing about if its true or not, most of yesterday was actually talk about HL2 and if they'll actually meet the set date.
if they do it then really it'll be a first for such a hyped title, which is kinda what leads me to believe this is a publicity stunt

atleast it got everyone off the arugment about which is better the Tarus Sharman or the Night Elf Mage lol (i mean obviously its the mage )

and considering steam is just a delivery system, i think i'll wait for HL2 as it should have it on CD - save me alot of time and bother. Not to mention i'm hearing alot of things about it scanning your hard-disk for files and sending the info back to valve, as the only game I've played online for like a year has been JK2 and hopefully when the new server is up JA - i'm happier without some huge spyware file on my system.

I'd rather HL2 was delayed and released in a stable state than rushed and released in a buggy state. I've brought several games recently where bug testing was clearly not a prority for the dev. teams.

http://www.steampowered.com for official steam site.

This months PC ZONE describes HL2 steam:

Unfortunately, as with pretty much every online game, Half-Life powered mods are riddled with cheats and its killing the game for genuine players. Valve is hoping to stem this with by using Steam, its online delivery service that is currently in beta testing. By the time Half-Life 2 hits the shelves it should be up and running properly, and the concept behind it is simple and hopefully effective. When you're playing a Valve game online you'll be constantly connected to Steam, which can update your code base whenever it feels the need, making it almost impossible to hack.

I didn't see any with GTA3 - the only game I've had problems with (and thats mainly due to poor design than anything else) was Enter The Matrix.

However, the most bugged utility has to be Dance 5 - and they still haven't solved a few of the problems that are still present.

HL2 Email Hoax?

what is posted actually echos my first thoughts and the email that i got back earlier this morning.
SDK due for release tommorrow, something i did not know - however now i'm totally stoked ... if that is only released on steam someone is going to HAVE to download it for me and pass it on, i must have the SDK!!

I don't know about GTA3 but Vice City has plenty of bugs, the clipping is especially atrocious, it's possible to be driving and run straight into an invisible wall/fence, likewise when driving you may be able to see a car behind you (with look behind) then when you actually turn to steal it, it's gone lol. This is all with "Drawing Distance" set to maximum as well.

Cant say I've noticed any with Vice City either - the only one I know about is the disappearing cars bug. The far clipping distance is pretty poor, I must admit.

It seems to be a rule that more freeform games have more bugs. This makes sense, but the confusing thing is, they often aren't bugs related to the game's freeform-ness... ala Vice City...

Never noticed any bugs in the PS2 version of Vice City either (and have played it a LOT!) - there are problems with it, the cops are stupid and can't climb onto buildings for example, but other than that it's pretty sound. Damn I love that game

Cheers,

Rich
