Is there any way to edit/remove the terrible default shadow for the characters?

Sure - just find blob.dds blob.png and make it transparent or wait for real dynamic shadow...

Or get RPG Mod. There's an option that lets you hide the shadow. Mr. Game is spot on though. That's how I used to do it.
