Sticking with a game idea is pretty much the hardest part of game creation for me. Before I brought FPSC, I had all these huge ideas, when I realized I would have to stick with one, simple one, I was dissapointed, but every few weeks, some way or another, I got a new idea.

How do you guys get YOUR ideas?

I get mine many ways. After playing Mirrors Edge, I wanted to make a Freerunner game, after playing Nazi Zombies, I wanted to make a zombie game, after playing Umbra, I wanted to make a Umbra type game, after installing SCI-FI Packs 1,2, and 3, I wanted to make a SCI-FI game (Which i'll probally start once SCI-FI pack 4 comes out), once I got the dark city pack, I wanted to make a modern game.

None of these I have stuck with past two or three levels. Three levels is probally a overstatement.

It's all so inspiring.

So back to the main question, how do you get your game ideas and how often do you stick with it?

When I am in need of a new topic for a novel, I think of just one simple thing. I put more detail into that one thing, and connect it with other relevant objects of interest. Then I apply on how each thing interacts with each other. The story is then born, which I can make a game out of. I'd have to say that my ideas just pop out of nowhere and are influenced by a huge variety of things rather than just a single game or movie. I stick very well to my ideas 90% of the time.

The problem is I am very limited when it comes to resources.I have a lot of ideas, but there's always something missing.

I will admit though,I stick with an idea for about a week or so.Then it's off to the next one.You could say consistency is not one of my strong sides.

If only I could stick with MY ideas for a week.

I can only [loop]stick with MY ideas for a day or two, then a new huge idea pops into my head and I'm like cup-stacking-girl (RWJ Reference) OH MY GOSH! OH MY GOSH! OH OH OH MY GOSH! THIS IS THE BEST GAME IDEA EVER! [/loop]

See the loop there? It happens at least 2 or 3 times a week.

That happens to me sometimes aswell, but I usually try my best to join the ideas together. Don't make it a new idea in overall, but a new addition to the one you currently have. This method is very short on success since most people can't connect things strongly. I'd just have to say to think more about your initial idea, and constantly keep on adding. These things are statements on how my brain functions, I'm not too sure on how others work, but I don't guarantee 100% success with everyone.

P.S. Nice RWJ reference

A good book from Andy Mcnabb or Chris Ryan, and sometimes allot of beer helps

My creative mind. And my deadlines. Also my friends. And those many games. And Classical Music. But also the whispering of the wind, when i have my window slightly open.
A desperate feeling of creating, is what makes me creating.

Soundtracks, and just walking outside observing beautifully nature.

I need to improve my writing capacity i got alot of ideas and they seem great in my head but not on paper(on WORD) So i guess i have to practice, and my mind is blank when i try to model something without any reason.

Zombie game with freerunning, umbra-like atmosphere, and a modern overworld design. Deep underground, there would be a more scifi like atmosphere where scientists slave away trying to figure out a cure for zombism.

... Sounds playable to me.

Just a few minutes of chatting with my friend and I can typically come up with a new game idea. I try very hard not to though, since my "Unfinished Games" folder is nearing 5GB.

You really got my head running Ply...

Quote: ""It's year 2050, and the rage of science was DNA. Everybody wanted to learn anything they could about it. So scientists around the globe start making test DNA experiments, most which relpicate or were based on fantasy creatures. Horses were turned into Unicorns and Pegasuses, animal to animal, all the light stuff have been done. If they succeded in the smallest experiment, they would be rich. This way for money got attention by the people who craved power, money, and fame. Something most people didn't have, but craved. Ask any child what he wanted to be when they grew up, they would say a scientist. The DNA research was going fine untill two poor, teenage, ameteur scientists wanted to try make something new, that hasn't been done. Since they couldn't get a job anywhere else, their life depended on this research. Research that would get them attention, and make them known by every single person on the planet. They tried to turn a human into a zombie.

The results? A bit more than they expected.
At first, everything was working according to plan, and the zombie was hammering on the glass, with the video camera running. They got bored of watching the zombie after twenty miniutes, so they left to go get some coffee.

While they were gone, the zombie was punching the glass as hard as it could. It was only a matter of time untill the saftey glass broke.
When the two teenage boys came back, there was a huge hole in the glass, and the only place the zombie could of gone was out the window.
The two teenage boys did the one sensible thing. They packed up and left in less than a hour. However, they left the camera on the whole entire time.

Your name is Michael K. James.
It's been two days. Already a good 40% of the US population is zombies. You decide you can't stay at home forever, and you set out to leave the city."

Thanks for the boost! The idea of applying Sci-Fi with Modern times didn't feel right untill I got the last puzzle piece involved. Zombies.

I get my inspiration from plystire[/sarcasm]

I get ideas throughout the day. I have approximately 10,987&1\4 ideas everyday for a new game. Practically anything can inspire me.

I just got inspiration from General Jackson[/not sarcasm]

It'll be based in the civil war timeframe, you play as a soldier fighting for the north, and in the end.... *gasp!* The confederates lose. Awww, deng, I spoiled the ending. Oh well, I'll toss that idea on the burner for a while, maybe it'll come back to me.

But seriously... what's with the personal hit?

Movies, graphic novels and sometimes books.

It's never another computer game that inspires me. If the game is great, then why should I make a lame clone of it? And if the game sucks...it simply doesn't inspire me.

Here is my latest inspiration, that makes me wish I had enough time to seriously work on a new game - the ultimate Nazi-Zombie movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEQwEmeWnyI&feature=related

I guess its the extreme caffeine abuse, but I could be wrong.

Maybe not in the way you said it

Zombie freerunning... like running away from jumpin' zombies. That's a great idea, see, that's how you merge ideas.

That is interesting indeed.
I guess no one has any rights on Nazi's or Zombies, so Nazi Zombies are going to get done to death.

I require two types of inspiration, one for game ideas and another to make the best I can and to always try harder.

Game inspiration for me is from movies and David Gemmell books added to my own twisted mind mixed with a little Pratchet and DiscWorld

As to (for me) the most important inspiration to excel as best I can, I look to Bond1, EAI, Plystire, rolfy, Xplosys and kravenwolf (among others) as without these people I would have given up on trying to make stuff or worst still think I was doing ok and never try to improve.

All Resident Evil Games inspires me. While I do get some good ideas. They don't come out as I expected. Im still holding on to this project I just can't seem to get right. Been holding on to it since 2008...The idea is still in my head. My hands just can't reproduce it...But sooner or later. I will start getting more serious with this project...One day...
