Ok i have been thinking for a while, do i make a RPG game or a game where you run around and attack the enmies with the storyline.

I really want to know what people enjoy and why.
Do you prefer RPG where you have close combat where you select attack and magic like Final Fantasy 10 or www.mojomagic.co.uk
Or would you prefer a game where you have the storyline like Final Fantasy 10 but you prefer attacking the enemies by running up to them and attacking, like mmmm for example Final Fantasy 10 without the close combat.

Which do you prefer?
I Think that people like RPG but it's slower, i was thinking of making the game without RPG, like you cast magic during the enemies coming at you like Lord of the rings two towers (without the magic of course)

Please help me !!!!
As many votes as possible please

Thanx a lot
Andrew

Percisely

I understand that you're new to db, but I recommend you start off with a simple 3D(if not 2D) project.

You might find an RPG very difficult. Just get something simple finished.

A sci-fi tactical turn baased squad level combat game would be nice. Wargames tend to be a little easier to make than a full blown RPG.

As a reference, check out games such as X-COM and Incubation.

You can enjoy both, they are both as good in their own right.

But like Yellow says, I prefer a finished game...see you in a couple of years

Make a game like .Hack//Infection (or Mutation or Outbreak) except with a faster battle system with less RPG elements (no elements, skills, magic, just a hack and slash)

Turnbased RPGs are like silent movies. They sell the media short (that media being videogames). The only reason they were turn based to begin with is because they originated from a turn based system (d&d pen and paper, ect...). Videogames ARENT board games. We dont need to hold back the genre by sticking to a board game based system.

Now, having said that, id like to say that I do understand and respect the diffrences between a Action game and a RPG. However, I think its VERY possible to add gameplay to a RPG without turning it into a buttonmasher. Even a game like Morrowind had realtime combat that was at least a LITTLE more interesting that FF/console style turnbased combat.

All you need is zeal

I happen to like turn based because I can plan my strategy and not lose a battle due to the cat jumping in my lap or my chat program popping up. I think that Zeal might be a little overzealous about limiting computer games to real time action games. After all, 3D Mahjong is also turn based. But, that didn't stop the developers from making a fine product.

Back to the original question - It doesn't matter what other people want. There are plenty of games in all genres to choose from and people will play whatever games they like.

If someone has a fetish for RPG that doesn't mean that he/she will like your RPG.

My advice to you is simple. If you want to write a game then write a game that you would want to play. Then when it's finished if you enjoy playing it, it's a safe bet that others will enjoy it too.

My second piece of advice - finish it! It's all too easy to leave a project part way through and never get round to completing it. I've done it many times. But the ones that I have finished I am very happy with.

Whatever you decide to write - Good Luck!

Dont do anything like Knights of the Old Republic - its okay, but you dont feel that your in control of much.

A sci-fi FPS is best - you can't go wrong with that, especially if you can introduce anything different.

LOL, KothOR is a great D20 Star Wars game. (overlooking the few bugs that did creep in...) But as TCA demonstrates, you can't make everyone happy. So, it is indeed best to make the kind of game that makes you happy. As for the feeling of control, that's a problem with almost all RPGs since they're telling a story. As my son played the game, I loved the dialog choices. (The scene where you can let them torture the girl had us laughing out loud.)

Hey this is what my game will be.
It has a long storyline like Final Fantasy, but it has the fighting mode like Loard of the rings.
So theres no rpg in it, but rpg will soon no longer be on any consoles.......
Long way to go

Attack the enemies with the storyline, now that is a novel idea

Personally I prefer space games, System Shock 2 is the most FPS I would bother going these days.
